STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team made its home-debut in style on Friday at Creekview Park as the Warriors swept a pair of games against Jefferson in non-conference action. ESU recorded a 9-0 shutout in the opener and followed with a 14-4 victory in game two.
The Warriors (4-0) seemed to feel right at home in their first games at the new state-of-the-art turf field as ESU scored 23 runs and tallied 20 hits on the afternoon. Jefferson (0-2) played its first games of the 2019 season and got things going offensively in game two with a four-run fifth inning.
Sophomore
Brock Kauffman paced the Warriors at the plate on the day, going 4-for-7 with a home run and seven runs batted in. Kauffman also added a double and scored four times for the Warriors. Junior
Carson Freeman also tallied four hits on the afternoon to go along with four RBI. Freeman notched three doubles, while redshirt junior
Kyle Rogers launched a two-run home run in game two for the Warriors. Rogers, along with redshirt senior
PJ Van Orman, freshman
Logan Stirr, and sophomore
Brainy Rojas combined for eight hits.
Tim Brodhag delivered a pair of hits for the Rams, including a bases-clearing double in game two. Arturo Figueroa went 2-for-4 in the opening game for Jefferson while adding an RBI in the second game. Joe Iannuzzi added a pair of hits and scored a run for the Rams.
The Warriors opened the scoring in game one with a double to left field in the bottom of the first inning off the bat of senior
Zarley Cina. Leading 3-0 after the bases-clearing double from Cina, ESU added to its advantage with a sacrifice fly from junior
CJ Lopez to make it 4-0.
Redshirt freshman
Chase Nowak started his second game of the season for ESU and would record a 1-2-3 top of the second after allowing a pair of hits against the Rams to start the contest. The quick inning on defense allowed ESU's offense to get back to work as the Warriors added three runs off Kaufman's first home run of the season in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 7-0.
The early offense would be plenty for Nowak and the Warriors' pitching staff as freshman
Justin Guidos helped his team work out of a bases-loaded situation in the top of the sixth inning. Guidos took over on the mound following a single through the left side off the bat of Austin Torres. The Rams would be unable to cut into the deficit as a pop-up to second followed by a strikeout ended the threat in the frame.
Redshirt junior
Joe Setticase worked a clean seventh inning to preserve the 9-0 victory for the Warriors. Nowak (2-0) scattered five hits over 5.1 innings of work for ESU and recorded four strikeouts in the process.
Early offense would be the name of the game once again for the Warriors in game two as Kauffman got the scoring started with a single in the bottom of the first inning that plated Rojas from second to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Rogers sent a 3-1 offering from Jefferson pitcher Bryce Herman over the fence in left field to make it 3-0 ESU.
The Warriors batted around against the Rams in the bottom of the second inning as seven runs crossed the plate. Rojas got things started with a bases-loaded walk to increase the lead to 4-0. Freeman followed with a double to plate a pair of runs and make it 6-0, while Kauffman delivered a double of his own down the left field line to give the Warriors an 8-0 lead.
Redshirt senior
Christian Rishel upped the ESU lead to 11-0 in the bottom of the third inning with a run-scoring double into left field that allowed Rojas to score easily from third. Jefferson rallied in the top of the fifth inning against the ESU bullpen as junior
Tyler Stafursky would take over on the mound for redshirt sophomore starter
Nate Fiala.
A one-out single followed by three consecutive walks allowed the Rams to get on the scoreboard with their first run of the afternoon. The Warriors would make another call to the bullpen as freshman
JP Nolan looked to get the Warriors out of a jam. Nolan recorded a strikeout against the first batter he faced before allowing a bases-clearing double off the bat of Brodhag that made it 11-4.
ESU added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning followed by a pair of runs in the sixth inning to stretch its advantage to 14-4. Freeman singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the sixth, allowing freshman
Jake Packer and redshirt freshman
Luke Nuneviller to score. Nolan closed out the contest on the mound for ESU with a 1-2-3 seventh as junior
Noah Gingrich snagged back-to-back line drives for the Warriors at second base.
Fiala (1-0) earned his first win of the season after allowing just one hit through four innings of work. He also tallied five strikeouts before exiting the game, while Nolan notched five strikeouts in his 2.2 innings of relief.
