EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior
Nick Giordano scored a game-high 23 points, while redshirt senior
Josh Williams added 21 points, seven rebounds and three blocks as East Stroudsburg University led from start-to-finish in a 93-63 victory over Mansfield at Koehler Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Warriors (15-6, 12-3 PSAC) upped their winning streak to four games, and they won for a 15th time in the last 17 meetings against the Mountaineers (4-19, 1-15 PSAC).
Giordano, who hit 5 of 10 attempts from 3-point range, finished one point shy of matching his career high. Williams made 9 of 11 shots from the floor while surpassing 20 points for a sixth time this season.
Freshman
Ryan Smith chipped in 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting, and redshirt senior
Jakwan Jones supplied eight assists and three steals for the Warriors. ESU scored 40 points off 29 Mansfield turnovers and had a dominant 30-4 advantage in fast break points.
The home side quickly set the tone for the afternoon, forcing four turnovers and taking an 11-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the contest. The margin grew to 22-6 after a 3-pointer by redshirt sophomore
Troy Jones with 13:07 remaining in the opening half.
Mansfield responded with a 13-0 run to get back within three, and the visitors got as close as two points at 26-24 following a 3-pointer by Tyler Moffe with 7:06 on the clock. ESU, though, closed the frame on a 13-3 run to restore its double-digit lead.
The advantage was 60-48 with 9:51 left in regulation when a Williams 3-pointer began a 17-2 stretch which put the game out of reach. Eleven different Warriors ultimately scored at least one point; freshman
Shamir Johnson led the reserves with eight points and a pair of assists in 14 minutes of action.
Williams has scored 20+ points in three of ESU's last four contests, including a career-high 30 at Kutztown on Jan. 26. With his three blocks this afternoon, he has now totaled 10 rejections over the past three games.
Smith hit his first eight field goal attempts while reaching double figures for a 14th consecutive game. He is shooting 58.2 percent from the field this season, a figure which ranks second among qualified PSAC scorers.
Giordano's five 3-pointers were a new season high, and he scored 20+ points for a fifth time in his Warrior career.
ESU earned a ninth-straight home win over Mansfield and improved to 8-2 at Koehler Fieldhouse this season. The Warriors return to the road for their next contest, traveling to Lock Haven for a 7:30 p.m. matchup on Wednesday.
Notes:
Jakwan Jones upped his career steals total to 196 with his three thefts this afternoon. He is now just one steal away from tying Whis Grant (2011-15) for third place in ESU history.
Saturday's win guaranteed that the Warriors will have a home game at Koehler Fieldhouse in this year's PSAC tournament. ESU, the defending conference and Atlantic Region champions, will be looking for its fourth PSAC title in the past eight seasons.
