CARY, N.C. – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team wrapped up its four-game road trip to North Carolina with a pair of losses on Saturday and Sunday night. ESU battled back from early deficits in both contests before falling 14-12 against Saint Thomas Aquinas and 7-5 against Dominican (N.Y.).
ESU (8-4) faced four quality programs out the NCAA DII East Region, including STAC, who qualified for the east regional last season after finishing the season 36-13. The Warriors held leads in both contests against the Spartans and Chargers despite not coming away with a victory.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top the first inning against STAC following run-scoring hits from junior
Anthony Torreullas and junior
CJ Lopez. The Spartans rallied against ESU pitching in the second and third frames, scoring 10 runs between the two innings.
Heading to the top of the fifth inning facing an 11-2 deficit, the Warriors put up a crooked number on the scoreboard against the Spartans. ESU would plate 10 runs in the inning to take a 12-11 advantage. Sophomore
Brock Kauffman delivered a two-RBI triple, while redshirt senior
Mike Sulcoski added a two-run single for the Warriors.
STAC, not to be outdone, knotted the score at 12-12 in the bottom of the seventh inning and captured a 14-12 win with a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Junior reliever
CJ Gonzales (0-2) suffered the loss for ESU after working 2.1 innings on the mound. Senior
Logan Zavada also worked two innings, allowing one run off three hits. Junior
Cam Voss took the no-decision for the Warriors.
The Warriors scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead against the Chargers on Sunday. The lead would go back-and-forth heading to the fifth inning as Dominican took leads of 3-2 and 4-3 against the Warriors. Lopez knotted the score in the top of the fifth off a fielder's choice that allowed Torreullas to cross home-plate.
Dominican gained the lead for good following a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Chargers added an insurance run later in the inning off a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4. ESU plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 7-5 but would be unable to move any closer to the Chargers.
Junior
Carson Freeman (1-1) took the loss for the Warriors after exiting the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a runner on base. He allowed five runs (three earned) off 10 hits while adding five strikeouts. Redshirt senior
Matt Durkin tossed a pair of scoreless frames to close the game for the Warriors.
The Warriors return home for four consecutive games at Creekview Park, beginning with a 2 p.m. matchup against Clarion on Friday. ESU also hosts Saint Anselm on Saturday and Clarion again on Sunday with both games starting at 2 p.m.
