ESU Baseball uses Big Seventh Inning to Defeat Clarion at Home, 11-7

Box Score

STROUDSBURG – A five-run bottom of the seventh inning pushed the East Stroudsburg University baseball team past Clarion University, 11-7, on Friday in a non-conference matchup at Creekview Park.

The Warriors (9-4) took an early 5-1 lead in the contest but wouldn't be able to hold onto the advantage as Clarion rallied to knot the score in the top of the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles (7-9) had their chances to try and take a lead late in the contest and out-hit ESU 13-12 in the contest.

Redshirt senior Mike Sulcoski finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in for the Warriors. Sophomore Brock Kauffman went 2-for-5 to go along with one RBI and one run scored. Kauffman also extended his hitting streak to 11 games and his on-base streak to 12 games. Redshirt senior Christian Rishel and sophomore Brainy Rojas each tallied a pair of hits for ESU, while junior Anthony Torreullas and senior Zarley Cina recorded a pair of RBIs for the Warriors.

A pair of Golden Eagles finished with three-hit contests as Bryce Jackson went 3-for-5 with one RBI while Ben Barth finished 3-for-4 with a two-run home run. Thomas Lavin and Chandler Palyas each tallied a pair of hits for Clarion, who stranded seven runners on base despite rallying in the sixth inning against the ESU bullpen.

Sulcoski would give ESU a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning with a double that allowed Cina and redshirt junior Kyle Rogers to both score. The Warriors doubled their lead in the third inning as Torreullas delivered a double of his own to score Rishel and junior Carson Freeman.

Both teams would tally a run in the fourth inning as Clarion trimmed the deficit to 4-1 following a balk that was called on redshirt sophomore Nate Fiala. ESU answered back with another run-scoring double to increase the lead to 5-1 as Rojas scored Sulcoski from second.

Clarion rallied to plate four unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning against Fiala and the Warriors as they knotted the score at 5-5. Dillon Wolbert delivered a run-scoring double that cut the deficit to 5-3 before Barth clubbed a two-run home run in the next at-bat to pull the Golden Eagles even with ESU.

The Warriors would use the seventh-inning stretch to rally their offense as ESU took a 7-5 lead following a single from Cina that plated a pair of runs. Three batters later, Paolini delivered his first home run of the season to give ESU a 10-5 advantage. Clarion tallied a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to cut the deficit to 11-7 after run-scoring singles from Cole Shaffer and Jackson.

Junior Connor Johnson took a no-decision for the Warriors after tossing the opening three innings. Johnson recorded a pair of strikeouts and scattered four hits against the Golden Eagles. Fiala allowed his first earned run of the season in 2.2 innings of work while notching four strikeouts. Freshman Justin Guidos (2-1) earned the victory after getting the Warriors out of the sixth inning and keeping Clarion off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Warriors host Saint Anselm on Saturday for a single nine-inning game beginning at 2 p.m. and wrap-up the weekend by hosting Clarion again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
