Saint Anselm Scores Early in 10-1 Victory against ESU Baseball

Box Score

STROUDSBURG – Saint Anselm avenged a pair of losses earlier in the season at the hands of the East Stroudsburg University baseball team with a 10-1 win on Saturday against the Warriors at Creekview Park.

ESU (9-5) had its chances offensively in the contest but would strand a total of 13 runners on base against the Hawks. The Warriors committed three errors defensively but worked around the miscues as Saint Anselm scored just one unearned run. Saint Anselm (4-10) rebounded after dropping a decision against Clarion earlier in the day, scoring four runs in the second inning and five runs in the sixth inning against ESU.

Sophomore Brock Kauffman extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-for-4 with the Warriors' lone RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning. Redshirt junior Tom Nuneviller went 2-for-2 after entering the game as a pinch-hitter for ESU. The Warriors also received hits from junior Anthony Torreullas, sophomore Brett Hardy, and freshman Jake Packer.

The Hawks top-three batters produced seven of their 11 hits in the contest as Tyler McKeon finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Matthew Butigian scored three runs for the Hawks to go along with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Drew Boli tallied a game-high three RBIs while going 2-for-4 at the dish for Saint Anselm.

Redshirt freshman Chase Nowak would see the Hawks produce the first run of the game off a single from Boli in the top of the first inning. Saint Anselm rallied against the ESU starter in the top of the second inning as Nowak would exit the contest with two outs as freshman JP Nolan entered from the bullpen. The Hawks delivered three run-scoring singles in the frame along with scoring a run on a wild pitch to take a 5-0 advantage.

ESU's bullpen kept the Hawks off the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning as a pair of bases-loaded walks and a hit-batter scored three of the five runs to increase Saint Anselm's lead to 10-0. The Warriors loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning following a pair of hits from Packer and Nuneviller. Kauffman plated Packer with an RBI groundout as the Hawks took the out at first base.

The Warriors left at least two runners on base in five different innings, including a bases-loaded scenario in the bottom of the eighth inning. ESU also used six different pitchers in the contest as senior Logan Zavada and freshman Mike Yates closed the contest for ESU. Nowak (3-1) took the loss for the Warriors after allowing five runs off five hits through 1.2 innings of work.

ESU wraps up the weekend with a single nine-inning contest against Clarion on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Warriors host LIU Post on March 20 before opening PSAC play against Lock Haven on March 22.
