Voss Tosses Six Shutout Innings as ESU Baseball Defeats Clarion at Home, 3-2

Box Score

STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University junior left-handed pitcher Cam Voss allowed just one hit through six innings of work and junior Joey Paolini delivered the eventual game-winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Warriors defeated Clarion 3-2 on Sunday at Creekview Park.

ESU (10-5) responded with a strong performance on the mound a day after allowing 10 runs against Saint Anselm. Clarion (9-10) looked to pick-up its second win on the day after defeating Saint Anselm, 12-4, earlier on Sunday at Creekview Park.

Sophomore Brock Kauffman recorded his third three-hit game of the season for the Warriors and extended his hitting streak to 13 games after finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one run batted in. Paolini, sophomore Brainy Rojas, and redshirt senior Mike Sulcoski each added one hit for ESU. Rojas was one of three ESU players that tallied two walks in the contest.

Alex Ficorilli and Tim Irons paced Clarion with two-hit outings, while Irons was responsible for one of the Golden Eagles' runs in the top of the seventh inning. Dan Fox delivered the other run-scoring hit for Clarion as a pinch-hitter. Chandler Palyas notched two of Clarion's four walks in the contest from the leadoff spot.

The Warriors plated a run in the bottom of the first inning against Clarion starter Jeremy Frazier as Kauffman doubled down the right field line to plate Rojas from second. Both pitchers would trade scoreless frames as Voss tallied a pair of strikeouts in the first, third, and fourth innings.

ESU's offense gave Voss a three-run cushion in the bottom of the sixth inning as Paolini came through with two outs and a pair of runners on base. Paolini turned-around a 2-0 pitch to plate both runners and make it 3-0.

Clarion trimmed the deficit to a single run in the top of the seventh inning after ESU turned to the bullpen. Junior Carson Freeman saw the Golden Eagles rally for three hits in the frame and make it 3-2 following a pinch-hit run-scoring single from Fox.

The Golden Eagles found themselves in position to at-least knot the score with the bases loaded and only one out in the top of the eighth inning. ESU freshman reliever Mike Yates would work around a walk and a single to get an inning-ending 6-4-3 double-play and preserve the Warriors' 4-3 lead. Yates worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch the first save of his career at ESU.

Voss (1-0) had his best outing of the year for the Warriors after scattering one hit through six innings of work. Redshirt senior Matt Durkin started the eighth inning for the Warriors and exited the game after facing two batters, giving-way to Yates, who finished the contest for ESU.

The Warriors host LIU Post on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before opening PSAC play on the road against Lock Haven on March 22.
