Season-highs in Runs and Hits Guide ESU Baseball Past Jefferson, 24-6

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team played its second non-conference matchup in as many days on Thursday as the Warriors recorded a season-high 24 runs off 18 hits en route to defeating Jefferson 24-6 at Alumni Field.
 
ESU (16-6) used a pair of seven-run innings to stake itself out to a comfortable lead after seeing the Rams plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The 24 runs are tied for fifth-most in program history, while the 18 hits set a new season benchmark for the Warriors.
 
Several different Warriors notched at-least two hits in the contest as redshirt senior PJ Van Orman led the way with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Van Orman, who finished with three runs batted in and four runs scored also work a pair of walks for ESU. Junior Carson Freeman hit his first career grand slam in the second inning, the first for ESU since May 11, 2017. Senior Zarley Cina and junior Anthony Torreullas also homered in the contest for the Warriors.
 
The Rams were paced by Cole Kriger's two RBI and 2-for-3 outing at the plate, while Michael Taffe finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. CJ Pluck also delivered a pair of hits for Jefferson, who tallied 10 in the contest.
 
ESU knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the second inning as junior Joey Paolini worked a walk with the bases loaded to plate redshirt senior Christian Rishel. Freeman would then give the Warriors a 6-2 cushion with his second home run of the season and 12th of his career.
 
Leading 7-2, the Warriors added a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings as freshman Jake Packer delivered a single up-the-middle to plate two runs and increase ESU's advantage to 11-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Van Orman tallied two of his of three RBI in the fifth with a single through the left side that made it 14-3 in favor of the Warriors. ESU would score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning as Cina highlighted the frame with a three-run home run to left field to make it 22-5.
 
The Warriors capped their scoring in the top of the eighth inning as junior Noah Gingrich doubled down the third base line to score a pair of runners and increase the lead to 24-5. The Rams added a run in the bottom of the ninth inning off a triple from CJ Goodz to complete the scoring.
Senior Logan Zavada was handed with a no-decision after allowing three runs off six hits through four innings of work. Zavada also tallied four of the Warriors' 11 strikeouts in the contest. Junior CJ Gonzales (1-2) tallied the win for ESU after working a pair of scoreless innings and yielding just one hit to go along with four strikeouts.  
 
The Warriors are back home on Saturday for a PSAC East twin bill against Mansfield beginning at 1 p.m. ESU travels to Mansfield on Monday for a pair of games against the Mounties after the originally scheduled doubleheader on Friday was postponed due to forecasted weather.
