STROUDSBURG – Strong pitching in game one and early offense in game two helped the East Stroudsburg University baseball team complete a doubleheader sweep against Mansfield on Saturday in a PSAC East matchup at Creekview Park. The Warriors took game one 7-0 and tallied a 5-3 win in game two.
ESU (18-6, 5-1) saw junior pitcher
Cam Voss record a season-high 10 strikeouts in the opener and redshirt senior
Christian Rishel go 3-for-3 at the plate in game two against the Mountaineers. Mansfield (4-12, 1-5) took a 2-1 lead in game two before seeing the Warriors plate three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Rishel finished the day 5-for-6 at the plate with a home run and two doubles to go along with three runs batted in for ESU. Junior
Anthony Torreullas went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI, while redshirt senior
PJ Van Orman went 2-for-3 in game two with a double and one RBI.
Dom Lopez and Camren Ney both finished 2-for-3 at the plate in game two for Mansfield. Ney and Eric Senior each drove in a run for the Mountaineers along with Josh Kulina, who finished 1-for-4 in the contest.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick lead in game one as junior
Carson Freeman delivered a single that would score sophomore
Brainy Rojas to make it 1-0. Torreullas and Rishel followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles to help the Warriors increase their lead to 4-0.
Freshman
Logan Stirr upped the advantage to 5-0 with a double in the bottom of the fifth inning as Torreullas scored. Torreullas would then tally his third home run of the season for ESU in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 6-0. The Warriors went back-to-back with the home run ball in the frame as Rishel hit his first of the season to cap the scoring at 7-0.
Voss (3-0) tossed six quality innings for the Warriors as he notched eight or more strikeouts for the third time this season. Voss yielded just one hit and issued four walks, while redshirt senior
Matt Durkin tossed the seventh inning to close the contest.
ESU would have to rally back from a 2-1 deficit in game two as the Mountaineers plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Senior delivered a run-scoring double for Mansfield, while Ney followed with a single to score Senior.
The Warriors responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning as Rishel knotted the score 2-2 with a single. ESU regained the lead as sophomore
Brock Kauffman scored from third on a balk, while junior
CJ Lopez increased the lead to 4-2 after reaching on a fielding error by Mansfield that allowed Van Orman to score.
Mansfield trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning but ESU answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame as Van Orman singled to score Rishel from second and make it 5-3. Freshman reliever
Justin Guidos closed the door on the Mounties, tossing a pair of scoreless frames en route to recording his third save of the season.
Chase Nowak (5-1) tied the ESU record for wins by a freshman pitcher in a season, becoming just the eighth player to do so since 1981. Nowak, a redshirt freshman, scattered three runs off six hits through five innings of work to go along with three strikeouts.
The Warriors travel to Mansfield on Monday for a pair of games against the Mounties beginning at 1 p.m. ESU is back home at Creekview Park on April 5 for a twin bill against PSAC East foe West Chester. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Creekview Park will be held prior to the start of game one.
