STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on Monday as the Warriors split a doubleheader against Mansfield at Creekview Park. ESU won the opener, 2-1, in extra innings before dropping game two, 3-1.
ESU (19-7, 6-2) acted as the visiting team in both contests against the Mountaineers as the doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Mansfield but was moved due to unplayable field conditions. The league also announced on Monday that redshirt senior
Christian Rishel was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week.
Rishel, who hit his second home run of the season in game one for the Warriors, earned the conference award for the second time of his career. He is tied for fourth all-time in program history with 17 home runs. Redshirt senior
PJ Van Orman finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate and was responsible for delivering the go-ahead double in the eighth inning that put the Warriors ahead 2-1.
Brady Mengel paced Mansfield (5-13, 2-6) in game one with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while Brittain Shander went 2-for-3 in game two with one run batted in. Camren Ney and Koty Fitzgerald each recorded an RBI in game two for the Mountaineers.
Game one would be a pitcher's dual as Mansfield's Tyler Guidos and ESU sophomore
Nate Fiala went toe-to-toe on the mound. Rishel would give ESU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as he drove a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field. The Warriors looked to add to their lead in the third inning but would strand a pair of runners on base against Guidos.
Fiala allowed just one baserunner through his first four innings of work before seeing the Mounties rally to knot the score in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mansfield tallied back-to-back singles against Fiala to start the inning and moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. The Mounties tied the game 1-1 off an RBI groundout from pinch-hitter Tony Brown.
Mansfield recorded the first two outs of the eighth inning before freshman
Logan Stirr singled to keep the inning alive. Van Orman plated pinch-runner
Tom Nuneviller from first with a double to make it 2-1. Junior reliever
Connor Johnson closed the door on the Mounties with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.
Johnson (1-1) tossed the final three innings of the contest for ESU and scattered just one hit while striking out one batter. Fiala took the no-decision after yielding one run off three hits and fanning seven batters through five innings. Guidos took the tough luck no-decision after fanning 10 batters and allowing just one run off six hits through seven innings of work for Mansfield.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game two as junior
Joey Paolini scored from third on a passed ball that eluded Mansfield's catcher. Junior
Joe Baran kept the Mounties off the scoreboard through the first four innings of the contest. Mansfield knotted the score with a run-scoring double and would take a 2-1 advantage following a bunt with runners on second and third.
ESU would be unable to put another run on the scoreboard against Bryce Zaparzynski, who stranded a total of eight Warrior runners on base in the contest. Paolini singled to start the seventh inning but would be erased following a 6-4-3 double-play by the Mounties. Zaparzynski would get sophomore
Brock Kauffman to groundout to third base to end the game.
Zaparzynski (1-1) fanned four batters and yielded just one run off six hits through seven innings of work for Mansfield, while Baran (0-1) suffered the loss for ESU after fanning six batters and allowing three runs off four hits through 4.2 innings of work.
The Warriors are back home at Creekview Park on April 5 for a twin bill against PSAC East foe West Chester. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Creekview Park will be held prior to the start of game one at 11 a.m.
