OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – A passed ball with a runner on third base in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the NYIT Bears to walk-off, 3-2, against the East Stroudsburg University baseball on Tuesday at Angelo Lorenzo Field in a non-conference tilt.
ESU (19-8) dropped its second consecutive outing after tallying just five hits against NYIT pitching in the contest. NYIT (16-5) scored its final two runs of the contest via a wild pitch and passed ball after notching their first run off a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore
Brainy Rojas paced the Warriors offensively from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with a double and one run batted in. Sophomore
Brock Kauffman added a run-scoring double of his own for ESU, while sophomore
Sirwalter Melendez delivered a double and scored a run. Freshman
Jake Packer tallied the other hit in the contest for the Warriors.
Matt DeAngelis went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the win for the Bears. Kieran Dowd scored the other run for NYIT and finished 1-for-3 at the plate, while Ben McNeill was credited with the lone RBI for the Bears.
Rojas started the contest with a double down the left field line for the Warriors against the Bears' Matt Carey. Rojas would later steal third and score easily off a double from Kauffman into right center.
Trailing 1-0, NYIT would load the bases in the bottom of the inning against ESU freshman
JP Nolan. The Warriors would get out of the inning without allowing a run as Nolan recorded his second strikeout to strand all three runners on base. NYIT would knot the score in the bottom of the second inning off a sacrifice fly to center that allowed DeAngelis touch home and make it 1-1.
Rojas gave ESU a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning as his single scored Melendez, who doubled in his at-bat for the Warriors. The Bears answered with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Dowd scored from third on a wild pitch.
ESU had a chance to take a lead in the top of the seventh inning as junior
CJ Lopez and Packer worked back-to-back one-out walks. NYIT would get out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and strand both runners in scoring position. DeAngelis started the bottom of the ninth with an infield single and would eventually advance to third following a passed ball and wild pitch. With runners on first and third for NYIT, DeAngelis scored on a pitch that eluded Packer to seal the 3-2 win for the Bears.
Nolan took the no-decision for ESU, while junior
CJ Gonzales worked three scoreless innings for the Warriors out of the bullpen. Freshman
Mike Yates (1-1) was handed with the loss after allowing the unearned run to end the contest.
The Warriors are back home at Creekview Park on April 5 for a twin bill against PSAC East foe West Chester. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Creekview Park will be held prior to the start of game one at 11 a.m.
