BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – A seven-run sixth inning helped the East Stroudsburg University baseball team rally to a 12-7 victory against LIU Post on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup. The Warriors improved to 2-1 against the Pioneers this season with the win.

ESU (23-9) batted around in the top of the sixth inning as junior Anthony Torreullas highlighted the frame with a two-run double that gave the Warriors an 8-3 advantage. LIU Post (20-11) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning but saw its lead disappear in the fifth.

Torreullas finished the game 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and one run scored for the Warriors, while sophomore Brainy Rojas went 3-for-6 with a double and one run scored. Sophomore Sirwalter Melendez hit his first home run of the season to go along with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Sophomore Brock Kauffman added a pair of hits and two runs batted in while scoring twice.

Redshirt senior Christian Rishel gave ESU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center field as Rojas scored from third. The Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame against freshman JP Nolan, who made his fourth start of the season for the Warriors.

ESU trimmed the deficit to 3-2 off an RBI single from Kauffman in the top of the second inning as freshman Jake Packer scored from third. The Warriors knotted the score in the fifth inning off a double steal as Kauffman beat the throw home, while Torreullas swiped second.

Packer would give ESU the lead for good with a single in the sixth inning to make it 4-3. Junior CJ Lopez increased the ESU advantage to 9-3 as his single to right field allowed Torreullas to score. The Warriors capped the scoring in the frame with another double steal as redshirt junior Tom Nuneviller scored from third before Lopez was called out during a run-down between second and third.

The Pioneers countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Warriors recorded back-to-back groundballs to escape the inning without further damage. Melendez delivered an inside-the-park home run in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on base to give the Warriors a 12-6 lead.

LIU Post tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 12-7 before redshirt freshman Chase Nowak tossed a pair of scoreless innings to close the contest for the Warriors. Senior Logan Zavada (1-1) tallied the win for ESU after working the fifth and sixth inning. Zavada allowed three runs off three hits, while Nolan took a no-decision after tossing four innings and yielding three runs off five hits.

The Warriors return home to face Bloomsburg on Friday at 11 a.m. for a PSAC East doubleheader at Hughes Field. ESU then travels to face the Huskies on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
