ESU Baseball Competes Series Sweep against Kutztown at Home (9-0, 11-1)

STROUDSBURG – Senior Zarley Cina hit a three-run home run in game one and the Warriors plated five runs in the third inning of game two as the East Stroudsburg University baseball team swept Kutztown on Saturday, 9-0 and 11-1, at Hughes Field in a PSAC East doubleheader.
 
ESU (28-12, 14-6) completed the four-game sweep of the Golden Bears, limiting Kutztown to just three runs in the series. Kutztown (4-26, 3-17) finally broke through against ESU pitching in the sixth inning of game two with a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
Senior Zarley Cina finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and six runs batted in to go along with three walks for the Warriors. Sophomore Brainy Rojas went 4-for-8 with a double and four runs scored out of the leadoff spot for ESU. Redshirt senior Christian Rishel finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored, while junior CJ Lopez went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
 
The Warriors opened the scoring in game one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Lopez would give ESU a 2-0 lead with a single that allowed Cina to score. ESU increased the advantage to 3-0 in the third inning as Rojas scored from third off a fielder's choice. Cina delivered the big hit in the frame for the Warriors, a three-run home run off the batter's eye in center field that upped the ESU lead to 6-0.
 
Redshirt senior Mike Sulcoski made it 8-0 in favor of the Warriors in the fifth inning with a single that plated Cina. Sophomore Sirwalter Melendez capped the scoring for ESU at 9-0 with a single that allowed Sulcoski to score.
 
Junior left-handed pitcher Joe Baran was in complete control on Saturday against the Golden Bears. Baran (2-1) earned the win after scattering two hits through five innings of work while fanning eight batters and walking one. Freshman Justin Guidos and senior Logan Zavada each tossed an inning of relief to close the game for the Warriors.
 
ESU would score the first run of game two against the Golden Bears in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Brock Kauffman plated Rojas with a double. Cina increased the advantage to 3-0 in the frame for the Warriors with a single that allowed both Kauffman and Torreullas to score. Lopez capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single of his own as Cina and Rishel scored to make it 5-0.
 
Leading 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kauffman delivered a run-scoring single to make it 8-0 as Rojas scored for ESU. Rishel would later plate Kauffman from second with a single to increase the lead to 10-0. Following a Kutztown run in the top of the sixth inning, Sulcoski hit his second home run of the season to give the Warriors an 11-1 advantage.
 
Redshirt sophomore Nate Fiala held the Golden Bears scoreless through the first five innings before allowing a pair of hits and one run in the sixth. Fiala (4-1) earned the win after scattering three hits and six strikeouts through six innings of work. Redshirt freshman Chase Nowak closed the game for ESU by striking out the side in order in the seventh inning.
 
The Warriors host NYIT on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup at Hughes Field beginning at 3 p.m. ESU will host Alumni Day and Senior Day festivities on April 27 as part of a PSAC East doubleheader against Millersville.
