STROUDSBURG – Playing its final twin bill at home during the regular season, the East Stroudsburg University baseball team recorded a pair of victories on Friday at Hughes Field against Shippensburg in PSAC East action. The Warriors won the opener 13-8 before taking the second contest 2-1.

ESU (31-15, 17-9 PSAC East) tallied eight doubles and hit a pair of home runs on the day, while freshman Logan Stirr added three doubles himself. The Warriors would get five innings from both junior Connor Johnson and junior Cam Voss on the afternoon. Shippensburg (18-27, 10-16) hit four home runs, including three in game one against the Warriors.

Senior Zarley Cina finished 4-for-6 with a home run and four runs batted in for ESU. His two-run home run in game one was his team-leading sixth of the season and 11th of his career. Stirr went 4-for-6 with an RBI and one run scored, while redshirt senior Christian Rishel finished 3-for-6 with one RBI. Junior Anthony Torreullas delivered the eventual game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning of game two for the Warriors.

Both teams would score a run in the opening frame of game one as Rishel knotted the score for ESU with a run-scoring single that plated Torreullas. Johnson worked a scoreless top of the second inning on the mound for the Warriors before the offense would give him some breathing room.

The Warriors would score seven times in the bottom of the second as junior CJ Lopez notched a two-run single to give ESU a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Brainy Rojas followed with a double to increase the advantage to 5-1, while Stirr doubled home Cina to complete the scoring and make it 8-1.

Shippensburg answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third and fifth innings against ESU, while the Warriors countered with two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Leading 12-5 in the bottom of the sixth, redshirt senior PJ Van Orman delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to increase the advantage for ESU to 13-5. The Raiders tallied three runs in the top of the seventh inning to trim the deficit to 13-8 before a strikeout and fly out would end the contest.

Johnson (4-2) tossed five innings for the Warriors and worked around five runs allowed off eight hits. Freshman Justin Guidos made his 22nd appearance of the season for ESU and allowed three runs off three hits with four strikeouts through two innings of relief.

Game two would start much like the opener did as Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a solo home run against Voss and the Warriors. ESU answered back in the bottom of the frame as Torreullas hit his fourth home run of the season with a runner on base to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

The solo home run from Torreullas would prove to be the eventual winning-hit for ESU as Voss, junior CJ Gonzales, and junior Joe Baran combined to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Both teams stranded eight runners on base in the contest and had chances to score with bases-loaded situations.

Voss (5-1) yielded just one run off three hits through five innings of work while tallying seven strikeouts and four walks for the Warriors. Gonzales tossed a scoreless sixth inning, while Baran recorded his first save for ESU after working a clean top of the seventh inning to close the door on the Raiders.

The Warriors travel to Shippensburg on Saturday for their final PSAC East regular season doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
