ESU Lacrosse Postseason Award History
EAST STROUDSBURG – Another memorable season, which was capped by a third-straight Division II tournament appearance, produced three IWLCA All-Americans for East Stroudsburg University, as sophomore
Krista Mitarotonda, junior
Tatyana Petteway and senior
Emma Rufolo were each recognized in a release by the national office on Tuesday afternoon.
Mitarotonda and Petteway were listed on the second team, while Rufolo was a third team honoree. They become the fifth, sixth and seventh multiple-time All-Americans for ESU's women's lacrosse program, while the three overall selections are tied for the most in program history.
The Warriors finished 2019 with a final record of 15-6 and appearances in both the PSAC and DII Atlantic Region championship games. ESU went 10-2 against PSAC opponents during the regular season, improving their mark against conference foes to 32-4 over the past three seasons.
Mitarotonda (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) is one of only two sophomores included among this year's All-American selections, with the other 46 honorees all juniors or above. She was the top scoring threat for the Warriors, contributing 61 goals and 17 assists to go along with a team-high 91 draw controls. ESU set a new program record with 290 goals on the year, reaching double figures in 17 of 21 contests.
A first team All-America choice in her debut collegiate season, Mitarotonda has two of the three 60+ goal seasons all-time at ESU. She scored 67 goals last spring, five back of the program record established by Kristin Restivo in 2000, and is already up to 13th in team history in career goals (127) heading into her junior year. Mitarotonda set a new single-season record with 12 hat tricks in 2019, including a career-high seven goals at Lock Haven in April and a career-best nine points (5 G, 4 A) in ESU's season-opener at Georgian Court.
Petteway (Nanuet, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) returns to the All-America stage after previously earning third team national accolades as a freshman in 2017. She led all of Division II in save percentage this season, posting a mark of .548 to become ESU's first individual statistical champion since Lauren Nunes topped the nation in assists per game (3.59) in 2016. Petteway went 14-6 with a career-high 211 saves and a 9.01 goals-against average, making double-digit stops in 12 of her 21 appearances.
A three-year starter, Petteway will enter her senior season ranked No. 2 all-time in team history with 596 career saves, 141 back of recent ESU Hall of Fame inductee Kelly Wagner. She registered a season-high 18 saves in ESU's 15-14 overtime win over No. 4 West Chester on March 27, and she added 16 stops in an 8-7 OT triumph over Mercyhurst in the PSAC semifinals. Petteway has an overall record of 42-12 for the Warriors, posting save percentages over 50 percent in each of her three collegiate seasons.
Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) repeats as a third team All-America honoree after another year of standout production on both sides of the field. She led ESU in ground balls (70) and caused turnovers (52), ranked second in draw controls (81) and was fourth with 59 points (38 G, 21 A). Rufolo was one of two Warriors, along with senior
TJ Jefferis, to record at least one point in all 21 games, and she scored her 100th goal at ESU in a Senior Day win over Gannon in April.
Defensively, Rufolo had multiple ground balls in 17 of 18 games to conclude the year, including a season-high eight at Edinboro (3/23) and West Chester (5/12). Rufolo also caused a career-high six turnovers against the Golden Rams in this year's Atlantic Region final.
The Warriors had previously received three All-America selections following the 1996 and 2018 seasons; their three honorees this year ranked second among teams in the Atlantic Region. ESU was one of just two schools in Division II to receive five first-team All-Region recipients this spring, as Mitarotonda, Petteway, Rufolo, Jefferis and junior
Hana Cicerelle were each recognized back in mid-May.
ESU concludes the 2018-19 academic year with a total of seven All-Americans. Field hockey seniors Ashley Ceschini, Bailey Quinn and Kelli Shapiro were honored in the fall, while redshirt junior Mike Raccioppi placed third nationally at 174 pounds at the 2019 DII Wrestling Championships.
