ESU Men’s Soccer Opens 2019 Season with 1-1 Draw against Molloy

Box Score

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team opened its 2019 season at home on Thursday and played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against the Molloy Lions at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

ESU (0-0-1) faced the Lions for the first time since the 2012 season and the sixth since first meeting in 1999. The Warriors held an 18-5 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 margin through overtime. ESU tallied nine shots on goal in the contest but would only be able to beat Molloy goalkeeper Dennis Mejia once in the contest.

Junior Anton Lysell scored his first goal of the season at the 41:57 mark of the first half to break a scoreless contest for the Warriors. Senior Marcus Torgersson led all players with three shots on goal, while senior Irvin Zuzic delivered two shots on frame.

Nick Biglin delivered the equalizer for Molloy at the 79:29 mark of the second half off a header inside the box. Angelo Bordenca and Oscar Magnusson recorded the other shots on goal for the Lions. Magnusson added his first assist of the season on Biglin's marker.

Lysell would give ESU its first tally of 2019 as he dribbled past a Molloy defender from 20 yards out and found the left corner of the net as Mejia was unable to make a stop from the top of his box.

The Warriors looked to add to their advantage in the second half as they peppered Mejia with five shots on frame. Mejia would stand tall on each of the opportunities, including an attempt by junior Michael Tolley in the 89th minute that would be blocked by the Molloy defense.

Both goalkeepers would steal the show in the second overtime as ESU redshirt sophomore Evan Miele stopped an attempt by Bordenca in the 104th minute. Mejia would make a pair of saves in the 102nd minute and 106th minute to keep the score knotted 1-1.

Miele (0-0-1) finished the match with a pair of saves in net for the Warriors, while Mejia (0-0-1) had to record eight saves to help the Lions earn the draw. ESU held a slight advantage (7-6) in corners, including six in the second half.

The Warriors head to Chestnut Hill on Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup against the Griffins. ESU is back at Eiler-Martin Stadium on Wednesday, September 11 for a non-conference tilt against Felician beginning at 2 p.m.
