ESU Knocks Off No. 24 Shippensburg to Snap Raiders’ 10-Game Win Streak

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team handed 24th-ranked Shippensburg its first loss since December 20, as the Warriors held on for a 66-63 victory on Saturday to snap the Raiders' 10-game win streak.

ESU improved to 12-8 overall and 8-7 in PSAC action on the year, and has now won four of its last five contests. Shippensburg suffered just its second conference loss of the season, dropping to 17-4 overall and 13-2 in league play.

Michal Weiss led a trio of Warriors who finished in double-figures, as he registered 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals. Zach Sabol added 10 points and five boards, and Marc Rodriguez chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.

ESU and Shippensburg battled back and forth throughout much of the first half, as the opening 14:08 of play featured 11 lead changes.

With the game tied at 27-all with just under two minutes remaining in the frame, the Warriors closed out the half on a 7-1 run, capped off by a jumper at the buzzer from Troy Jones, to open a 34-28 advantage at the halftime break.

ESU quickly pushed the lead to double-digits just over a minute into the second half, and grabbed its largest lead of the contest, 44-30, at the 16:30 mark following a bucket in the paint from Sabol.

Following a timeout, the Raiders rattled off 11 straight points, led by five from John Castello, to trim the deficit to 44-41 with 13:09 on the clock. The Warriors then answered back to get some breathing room, as Weiss hit a pair of foul shots and Rodriguez followed with a three-pointer to make it a 49-41 game.

With 8:12 remaining in the tilt, Daylon Carter hit a three to give Shippensburg its first lead since the 7:11 mark of the first half. The Raiders grabbed a three-point advantage in the ensuing minutes, but the Warriors were able to battle back and re-gain the lead with 4:36 on the clock after a pair of free throws by Weiss.

ESU led by four with under a minute remaining when Shippensburg's Dom Sleva was fouled and headed to the line for a pair. Sleva made 1-of-2 to cut it to a one-possession game with 0:55 left.

On the Warriors' next possession, Rodriguez made a nice drive to the lane but wasn't able to finish on a heavily contested layup and Sleva came down with the board before the Raiders called timeout.

The Raiders had three straight looks from deep to tie it following the timeout, but attempts from Jake Biss, Carlos Carter and Dom Sleva were all off the mark. Following Sleva's miss, Shippensburg secured the third-straight offensive rebound and called a timeout with 1.5 seconds remaining.

Coming out of the stoppage, Kitt Najee Walls leaped and deflected the in-bounds pass for a huge defensive play to help ESU secure the 66-63 victory.

ESU shot 41-percent overall from the field but struggled from long range, going just 3-of-15 (.200) from beyond the arc. Shippensburg hit 43.1-percent of its shots from the floor and drained 7-of-23 (.304) from deep.

ESU returns to action this coming Wednesday, February 5 at Bloomsburg, with opening tip set for 5:30 p.m.
