Offense Explodes for Warriors in 22-7 Victory against Frostburg; ESU Defeats Le Moyne 2-1 in Extras

CARY, NC – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team played a pair of games on Friday at the USA Baseball Training Complex and recorded two victories as the Warriors defeated Le Moyne 2-1 in 12 innings and Frostburg State 22-7 in the nightcap.

ESU (3-1) would see its offense explode for 22 runs off 21 hits against the Bobcats after producing just two runs off of five hits against the Dolphins. The Warriors offense was guided by senior Anthony Torreullas, who finished with a combined four hits and seven runs batted in, including a three-run home run against Frostburg State.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Chase Nowak started game one for the Warriors and would navigate through five innings against the Dolphins. Nowak yielded one run off of two hits and tallied seven strikeouts for ESU.

ESU would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Torreullas singled into center field to allow junior Tommy Dunleavy to score. The Dolphins countered with a run of their own in the top of the third inning to knot the score 1-1. Le Moyne scored a runner from third base following a sacrifice fly to left field.

The bullpen would do its part the rest of the way for ESU as senior Tyler Guidos, redshirt senior Joe Baran, and sophomore Justin Guidos combined to toss seven innings of no-hit baseball for the Warriors. Tyler Guidos worked three innings and tallied five strikeouts to send the game into the ninth inning knotted 1-1. Baran followed by fanning eight of the 11 batters that he faced for the Warriors heading into the 12th inning.

The Warriors would take their second lead of the contest as senior CJ Lopez delivered a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the frame to score freshman Tim Haverstick and secure the 2-1 victory for ESU. Justin Guidos earned his first win of the season after working a clean inning and recording a pair of strikeouts.

Redshirt junior pitcher Nate Fiala made his first start of the season for ESU in game two against the Bobcats. Fiala surrendered just two hits and tallied one strikeout against Frostburg State as the Warriors provided him with some early offense.

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior Carson Freeman plated freshman Ben Piripavel with a run-scoring triple. Freeman would then score off a double from Torreullas that made it 2-0. Dunleavy extended the lead to 3-0 in the frame with a double before freshman Ben Stokes delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

ESU would add three runs in the second inning and two runs in the third inning to take a 9-0 advantage into the fourth inning against Frostburg State. The Bobcats rallied against ESU sophomore reliever Mike Yates in the fourth inning as they scored seven runs to trim the deficit to 9-7.

Junior catcher Derek Stento answered for the Warriors with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-7. The Warriors increased their lead to 12-7 in the following inning as Dunleavy and Stokes tallied RBI base knocks.

Leading 13-7 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors plated seven runs to extend their advantage over the Bobcats to 20-2. The inning featured six hits for ESU, including a three-run home run off the bat of Torreullas. ESU closed the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth inning off a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and fielder's choice.

Freshman pitcher Brent Francisco would keep Frostburg State out of the hit column after entering the game for ESU following the Bobcats' seven-run rally. Francisco fanned 10 batters over the final five innings of the contest without yielding a hit to help preserve the victory for the Warriors. Francisco also earned his first collegiate save after entering the contest with ESU leading by less than four runs.

The Warriors face Assumption on Saturday at 5 p.m. from the USA Baseball Training Complex and close their trip to North Carolina with a contest on Sunday against Le Moyne beginning at 10 a.m.
