Voss Records 12 Strikeouts as ESU Baseball Defeats Assumption 9-1

CARY, NC – Senior left-handed pitcher Cam Voss recorded 12 strikeouts and tallied his first win of the season as the East Stroudsburg University baseball team defeated Assumption 9-1 on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

ESU (4-1) pushed its winning streak to three games as the Warriors scored six runs through the opening two innings of action against the Greyhounds. Junior Brainy Rojas, senior Anthony Torreullas, and senior CJ Lopez each tallied two hits each in the contest.

Voss made his second start of the season for the Warriors and would keep the Greyhounds off the scoreboard through five innings of work. The Warriors provided Voss with early offense as ESU plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Brock Kauffman laced a triple into left field to plate a pair of runners and give ESU a 3-0 advantage.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning following a pair of walks and a single from Lopez. Senior Carson Freeman gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead with a run-scoring single that scored senior Joey Paolini. Torreullas added his second RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Lopez to score and make it 5-0.

Rojas notched his second hit of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as his single scored two runs to increase the Warriors' lead to 9-0. Sophomore Justin Guidos would take over on the mound for ESU to start sixth inning for the Warriors. Guidos fanned three batters in the inning after issuing a pair of walks and yielding one hit.

Assumption tallied its lone run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning against Guidos and the Warriors following a single with a pair of runners on base. Guidos stranded a pair of runners on base after getting a strikeout and fly ball to end the inning.

Senior reliever CJ Gonzales tossed the final two innings out of the bullpen for the Warriors and recorded four strikeouts. Gonzales would get back-to-back strikeouts in the eighth inning after allowing a one-out base runner. He fanned the first two batters of the ninth inning before Assumption added a double to put a runner on base. A ground out to shortstop would end the game and preserve the 9-1 victory for ESU.

Voss, Guidos, and Gonzales limited Assumption to three hits in the contest and tallied 18 strikeouts. Seven different hitters notched at least one hit in the contest for the Warriors as Torreullas and Kauffman added a triple each, while Lopez tallied a double.

The Warriors close their trip on Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup against Le Moyne at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
