ESU Men’s Basketball Tops Mansfield to Clinch PSAC Tournament Berth

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team topped Mansfield by a 74-56 margin on Wednesday night to secure a PSAC Tournament berth and push its win streak to a season-high six games.

The victory from ESU, paired with a loss by Kutztown, secured a spot in the PSAC Tournament for the Warriors for the 11th straight season.

Sitting at 16-8 overall and 12-7 in conference play following the win, the Warriors remain in second place in the PSAC East and will look to hang on to a top-two seed down the stretch in order to earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs. ESU has finished among the top three in the PSAC East standings in each of the previous seven seasons.

The victory over Mansfield extended ESU's win streak to six straight, marking the team's longest of the season. The Warriors previously won five in a row earlier in the season, spanning December 4 through January 3.

It was another balanced effort on the offensive end for ESU as six different players scored eight or more points in the win. Justin Paz and Marc Rodriguez, who combined for seven three-pointers, notched 12 points apiece to lead the way. Troy Jones chipped in 11 points, Michal Weiss and Zach Sabol added nine each, and Carlos Pepin finished with eight.

Weiss, Sabol and Pepin did big work on the boards for the Warriors, as the trio pulled down a combined 23 rebounds to help ESU record a 41-37 advantage on the glass in the contest.

ESU shot 40.6 percent from the field overall and 32.3 percent from downtown in the victory. After an efficient first half of shooting for Mansfield, the Mounties were held to a 31 percent mark in a second half that was dominated by ESU.

The Warriors, who carried a 40-34 advantage into the halftime break, opened things up with some strong play early in the second. They limited Mansfield to just six points in the first 10 minutes of the half while building a 55-40 advantage in the process. Weiss and Sabol were able to get some easy buckets in the paint during the run for the Warriors, combining for eight points during the stretch.

ESU pushed its lead to over 20 for the first time of the contest with 3:17 remaining on a triple from Paz, and the rookie followed it up with his game-high fourth three-pointer on the team's next possession to give the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 73-49.

The Warriors closed out the 74-56 victory to push their win streak to six straight and clinch a spot in the PSAC Playoffs.

ESU returns home to face Shepherd this Saturday, February 22, with opening tip from Koehler Fieldhouse set for 3 p.m.
