ESU Baseball Sweeps IUP at Home in Monday Doubleheader, 11-0 & 15-1

STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team pushed its winning streak to 10 games on Monday as the Warriors swept a pair of games against the IUP Crimson Hawks at Creekview Park, 11-0 and 15-1.

ESU (11-1) tallied 26 runs as a team while surrendering just one as the Warriors notched 25 hits and four home runs, including a pair of senior Joey Paolini. The Warriors continued to receive strong pitching performances as redshirt sophomore Chase Nowak tallied eight strikeouts in game one, while senior Cam Voss added nine in game two.

Paolini finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and five runs batted in to go along with his two home runs. Senior CJ Lopez paced the Warriors with a 5-for-6 effort at the plate as he tallied five RBI, including a bases-clearing double in game two. Junior Tommy Dunleavy added a solo home run on the day, while senior Anthony Torreullas hit a grand slam for ESU in game two.

Nowak allowed a pair of hits and one walk through five innings of work in the opener for the Warriors as the offense spotted him a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Dunleavy opened the scoring with a single to score junior Brainy Rojas. ESU added to the lead as Paolini worked a walk with the bases loaded to make it 2-0.

The Warriors increased their lead in the third inning with a pair of runs as senior Carson Freeman made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to score Paolini from third. ESU would plate five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Lopez made it 7-0 with a two-run single before junior Brock Kauffman laced a double to score a pair of runs and make it 9-0.

Paolini closed the scoring in the fifth inning of game one as he delivered his first home run of the season to score Torreullas and extended the advantage to 11-0. Senior Connor Johnson and sophomore JP Nolan closed the game out of the bullpen for ESU as both kept the Crimson Hawks out of the hit column. Nowak improved to 2-0 on the season and allowed just three baserunners through five innings.

Voss would be locked in for the Warriors on the mound in game two as he fanned nine of the 13 batters that he faced through four innings of work. After a scoreless inning from both pitchers to start the contest, Dunleavy delivered a solo home run to make it 1-0 in favor of ESU in the second inning.

The Warriors would pull away from the Crimson Hawks in the bottom of the third inning as ESU scored eight runs off seven hits. Freeman and Dunleavy opened the scoring with run-scoring hits to extend the lead to 3-0 before Torreullas made it 4-0 with an RBI double. Sophomore Logan Stirr made it 6-0 with a double and would be followed later in the frame by a double from Lopez that scored three runs to make it 9-0.

Torreullas hit ESU's second grand slam of the season in the fourth inning to make it 13-0 as he pulled into a tie for the team lead with four home runs this season (Dunleavy). Paolini tallied the Warriors' second home run of the frame as his two-run shot made it 15-0.

Tyler Guidos and Justin Guidos worked a clean fifth and sixth inning out of the bullpen for the Warriors as Tyler retired the side in order in the fifth with three strikeouts. Joe Baran closed the game for ESU in the seventh inning and allowed one run off two hits while fanning a pair of batters. Voss improved to 3-0 on the season and has yet to allow a run this season through four starts.

ESU is scheduled to host Bloomfield at home this weekend for three games with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at Creekview Park beginning at 1 p.m. The Warriors also host the University of the Sciences next week before traveling to Mansfield on March 13 to open PSAC East action.
