Warriors and Bears Draw 2-2 in Extra Innings in Non-Conference Matchup

STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team played to a 2-2 draw on Thursday in a non-conference matchup against the Bloomfield College Bears at Creekview Park. The contests moved into the 10th inning before being called due to darkness.

ESU (11-1-1) scored both its runs against the Bears in the bottom of the fifth inning after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning. The tie is the first for ESU since the 2017 season and first non-conference draw since 2003.

Senior CJ Lopez finished the contest 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, while junior Brainy Rojas and senior Anthony Torreullas each delivered a triple for ESU. Junior Derek Stento notched a hit for the Warriors after entering the game defensively for freshman Tim Haverstick.

Senior Connor Johnson would get the start on the mound for the Warriors as he kept the Bears off the scoreboard through the first three innings. Johnson scattered four hits and tallied four strikeouts to go along with one walk.

Bloomfield took a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fourth inning following a two-run home run off the bat of Tyree Bradley. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs to knot the score 2-2.

The inning started with a triple from Torreullas, who would later score off an infield groundout from sophomore Logan Stirr. Following a walk to Haverstick, freshman Ben Piripavel would advance a pair of bases off wild pitches by the Bears. Piripavel would later score off another wild pitch to make it 2-2.

Senior Tyler Guidos would get the Warriors out of a jam defensively in the sixth inning after entering with a pair of runners on base and one out. Guidos got a groundball to second before fanning the next batter to end the inning.

The best offensive opportunity for ESU would come in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Warriors loaded the bases with two outs after a single and two walks. Stento opened the inning with a single before Rojas and junior Brock Kauffman reached base. Bloomfield escaped the jam with a popup to the first baseman.

ESU's bullpen allowed just three hits through six innings of relief as freshman Brent Francisco worked 1.1 innings before giving way to Guidos. Sophomore Justin Guidos worked a clean eighth inning as he registered a pair of strikeouts, while redshirt senior Joe Baran and senior CJ Gonzales each worked one inning. The Warriors tallied 14 strikeouts in the contest while issuing only four walks.

The Warriors host Bloomfield for a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at Creekview Park beginning at noon. ESU and Bloomfield will open with a seven-inning game before playing a nine-inning contest.
