GREENWOOD, S.C. – The East Stroudsburg University softball team saw its offense come alive in the final game of a doubleheader at Lander, as the Warriors earned a split with the Bearcats on Sunday.
After falling by a 7-1 margin in the opening contest, ESU (4-8) outslugged Lander (16-5-1) in game two to come away with an 8-6 victory and earn the doubleheader split.
GAME 1: Lander 7, ESU 1 | Box Score

Denva Shaw-Tait and
Lexi Wright each posted 2-for-3 games at the plate for the Warriors, but Delaney Guerrero and Sydney Grimes combined for seven RBIs for Lander to help propel the Bearcats to victory in the opening game.
Lander got a pair of runs in the first inning as Guerrero hit a two-run triple to give the Bearcats the early advantage. In the bottom of the second, Grimes knocked in a pair on a double to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Bearcats added another in the fifth inning as Guerrero notched her second extra-base hit, this time a run-scoring double, to make it a 5-0 game in favor of Lander.
ESU got on the board in the top of the sixth inning as
Kaitlyn Caleen launched her first homer of the year to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Grimes doubled in two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to add some insurance for the Bearcats, and Ashley Vinson rounded out her complete-game effort, as Lander went on for the 7-1 win.
Vinson tossed seven innings of one-run ball, scattering eight hits and striking out four in the game. For ESU,
Mikayla Pourby got the start and threw four innings while allowing two earned runs, and
Leigh Ann Jenkins went two innings and struck out one in relief of Pourby.
GAME 2: ESU 8, Lander 6 | Box Score
Shaw-Tait (3-run homer) and
Marissa Govan (2-run homer) both went deep for the Warriors, while
Ashley Spencer and
Shannon Bonewit added an RBI apiece, as ESU outslugged Lander for an 8-6 victory in game two.
Kaylee Hazewski notched a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 game at the plate.
Hazewski hit a leadoff double to begin the game for the Warriors, and Govan quickly gave ESU the lead on a two-run homer, which was her first of the season. The Warriors cashed in later in the inning as well as
Shannon Bonewit hit a sac fly to drive in
Rachel Arner and make it 3-0 ESU.
The Warriors then doubled up their lead with a three-run top of the third. After Caleen and
Ashley Spencer drew walks, Shaw-Tait drove one over the fence for a three-run homer to pad the lead to 6-0. The home run for Shaw-Tait was also her first of the season.
ESU added one more in the fourth as Spencer reached on a fielder's choice that drove in
Gianna Coyle and pushed the advantage to 7-0.
Lander got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly RBI from Guerrero followed by an unearned run that saw Sara Hammill cross the plate, as the Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 7-2.
The Bearcats added four more runs in the sixth to make it a one-run contest. After a sac fly RBI from Grimes, Logan Coward hit a three-run homer to make it a 7-6 game.
The Warriors answered in the next frame as Spencer scored on a wild pitch to give ESU some breathing room once again.
Lander brought the tying run to plate with one out in the final frame, but Range was able to get two straight fly outs to finish off her second complete game in as many days and secure the win for the Warriors. Range improved to 3-2 in the circle on the year following the victory.
The Warriors continue their road trip with a pair of games at USC Aiken on Monday, March 9 beginning at 4 p.m.
