Last Time Out: On Homecoming, ESU dominated defensively, holding Millersville to under 100 passing yards and forced eight sacks in a 27-7 victory over Millersville. Tailback
Gunner Anglovich rushed for 139 yards and a pair of ESU touchdowns, while
Deshawn McCarthy (3.5) and
Andre Eldridge (2.5) combined for six sacks. The Warriors connected on a 96-yard touchdown when
Jake Cirillo found a wide-open
Rece Bender after a quick pump fake. The play was the longest play from scrimmage for ESU since 2013.
Running' and Gunnin': PSAC leading rusher
Gunner Anglovich was named the conference's athlete of the week after posting 139 yards of rushing and two touchdowns to lead the powerful rushing attack that posted 257 yards against Millersville. The native of Bethlehem now has 643 yards rushing in six games this season (107.2 yards per game). Along with leading the league in rushing, Anglovich also ranks number one in rushing touchdowns (7). Among Division II competition, Anglovich ranks 11th in rushing touchdowns (7), 14th in total rushing yards and rushing yards per game, 27th in all-purpose yards per game (136.83) and 31st in total touchdowns. He looks to become the first Warrior to lead the PSAC in rushing since all-time ESU rushing leader Robert Healy ran for 116.3 yards per game as a redshirt-senior in 2016. Anglovich is just 95 yards away from 1,000 career rushing yards.
McCarthy The Menace: As he has done all season, defensive end
Deshawn McCarthy caused chaos, totaling 3.5 sacks and seven total takedowns against Millersville. This season, McCarthy has already totaled 10-plus sacks in just six games, with 10.5 on the campaign for the native of Philadelphia. McCarthy is now tied for the Division II lead in sacks with Tylen Coleman of Western New Mexico. His four sack game against Pace and his 3.5 sack output against Millersville both rank top-10 in program history. He is the only player in Division II this season to register two 3.5-plus sack contests. McCarthy is just four sacks away from breaking the school record for sacks in a season with five games left in the regular season. Joe Ruedt (1992) and Des Hussey (1991) currently hold the single-season record with 15 sacks.
Double Trouble: Both Anglovich and McCarthy were recognized by the PSAC as East Athletes of the Week. It marks the first time since 2017 and just the 11th time since 1995 that ESU has earned PSAC East Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors during the same week. In 2017, Jaymar Anderson, Sekou Jones and Marquis Fells (Special Teams Athlete of the Week) swept the awards after facing Lock Haven. It's the second time McCarthy has earned Defensive Athlete of the Week this season, joining Matt Freed (5x), Kevin Nagle (2x), Fred Rice (2x) and Bryan Thomson (2x).
Rece'ing to the End Zone: Rece Bender's explosive play continued last week with an impressive 96-yard touchdown from
Jake Cirillo, who was wide open after a pump fake. The play was the longest play from scrimmage for the Warriors since 2013, when Matt Soltes found Robert Bleier for a 99-yard touchdown. Cirillo and Bender's 96-yard connection is tied for the NCAA Division II Lead this season with Bowie State's Ja'Rome Johnson and Darious Bowman 96-yard strike against Saginaw Valley on Sept. 11. Bender also has a 78-yard reception touchdown from Cirillo and a 99-yard program record kickoff return against Lock Haven this season. The 99-yard return is tied for the fifth longest this season in Division II. Bender's 2,194 all-purpose yards ranks 34th in program history. He is just 52 receiving yards away from 1,000 career receiving yards.
Passing a Legend: Jake Cirillo is just two completions away from passing current Penn State head coach James Franklin for ninth all-time in career completions (323) in program history.
Dirty Laundry: The Warriors have continued to be bitten by the penalty bug ranking among the most penalized teams in Division II. ESU is 152nd of 163 teams in fewest penalties and 149th in fewest penalty yards per contest.
Scouting West Chester
- The Golden Rams and Warriors enter Saturday with an identical 4-2, 2-1 PSAC East record.
- ESU and WCU are similar with a strong rushing offense and an impressive pass rush.
- WCU uses a balanced offensive attack, with four players registering 30-plus rushing attempts on the league's top rushing offense. Phil Poque (483 yards) and Ja'Den McKenzie (423 yards) with a combined 906 yards of rushing.
- The Golden Rams have five players ranked in the top 125 of players in Division II in sacks, with each averaging at least a half sack per contest. This week's matchup will feature two of the premier pass rushers in Division II with McCarthy (1.75 sacks per game) and WCU's Michael Gobora (1.50 sacks per game). The two defensive ends rank tied for first and third in DII, respectively. As a team, WCU ranks second nationally in team sacks.
Up Next: ESU returns to Eiler-Martin Stadium next week, when ESU hosts Bloomsburg at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. in the Poconos.
