EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Mansfield on Saturday afternoon at Creekview Park. The Warriors scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings of game one to rally for the 9-4 win and used a walk-off single from redshirt junior
Brock Kauffman in game two to secure the 2-1 victory.
The Warriors improve 7-3 overall and 5-1 in PSAC East play while the Mountaineers drop to 2-8 and 1-5 in conference play. After today's games, the Warriors now have the most conference wins in the PSAC East with five.
Redshirt freshmen
Ben Piripavel and
Tim Haverstick each finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate, with three hits apiece in game one. Redshirt junior
Tommy Dunleavy went 3-for-7 at the dish, which included driving in four runs in the first game. Kaufmann would go 2-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and knocked in the only two Warriors' runs in game two. In game one, freshman
Jerome Repetz went 2-for-4 with one run scored and four RBIs, which included a two-run shot in the 5th inning to give the Warriors the lead.
Redshirt sophomore
Chase Nowak got the nod on the mound in game one for the Warriors, throwing 4.0 innings and yielding three runs on five hits while recording a season-high nine strikeouts.
Redshirt senior
Cam Voss was given the no decision in game one despite dealing 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and matching his season-high with 11 punchouts.
Game 1 Recap
The Warriors were trailing 3-1 headed into the bottom half of the fifth inning but four runs in the frame, followed by four more runs in the sixth inning allowed ESU earn the 9-4 comeback victory in game one against Mansfield.
The Mounties jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second when they scored three runs on three hits all with two outs. Zach Spray started the rally with a single which was followed by a walk from Nate Cotton. On the first pitch he saw, Ryan Wentzel singled to center, scoring Spray to give the Mounties the lead. Brittain Shander recorded another single that allowed Haas to score and after Assaf Lowengart worked a walk to load the bases, Wentzel raced home on a wild pitch to give Mansfield a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors responded with one run on two hits in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1.
Carson Freeman led off with a ground rule double to right field, followed by a bunt single from
Tommy Dunleavy. With one out, Repetz grounded into a fielder's choice that cut off Dunleavy but allowed Freeman to score the Warriors' first run of the game.
Mansfield had an opportunity to extend their lead in the top of third when they put runners on second and third with no outs. However, Nowak responded with three straight strikeouts to keep the Mounties from pushing across a run.
ESU produced their own scoring chance in the bottom half of the inning when they loaded the bases with no outs on a
Tim Haverstick single, a
Brainy Rojas hit by pitch and an infield single from
Ben Piripavel. DePrimo responded by getting the Warriors to pop out and strikeout twice to work out of the jam.
The Warriors offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning as they took advantage of a pair of Mansfield errors to score four runs on four hits and take a 5-3 lead. Piripavel and Kauffman recorded back to back singles to open the frame before a ball driven to deep center field by Dunleavy was dropped, allowing the baserunners to race home and tie the game at 3-3. After a strikeout for our number two, Repetz crushed an 0-2 pitch deep to right field, scoring Dunleavy and giving the Warriors the lead.
Mansfield responded with a one run on one hit in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Warriors lead to 5-4. Jake Haas worked a leadoff walk before being driven in my Brittain Shander on a single.
ESU pushed their lead to 9-4 in the home half of the inning with four runs on three hits. Piripavel led off with a single, Kaufmann was hit by a pitch and Freeman worked an eight pitch walk to load the bases. On the first pitch he saw, Dunleavy hit a bases clearing triple to right centerfield to give the Warriors an 8-4 advantage. Repetz collected his fourth RBI of the contest when he grounded out to second, driving in Dunleavy for ESU's ninth run of the game.
After yielding a leadoff single in the ninth,
Tyler Guidos recorded the first out on a fielder's choice before getting Zachary Shertzer to ground into a game ending double play.
Mansfield starter Hunter DePrimo was handed the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on 11 hits over 5.0 plus innings of work. DePrimo also recorded nine strikeouts.
Game 2 Recap
With Voss dealing a gem and the Warriors entering the top of the seventh leading 1-0,
CJ Gonzales was summoned out of the bullpen to record his second save of the season but allowed the game-tying run to score instead. The Warriors responded with the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning after the bases were loaded for Kauffman, who delivered a drive over the right fielder's head to give ESU the 2-1 victory.
Mansfield starter Colby Shimmell was awarded with a no decision after holding the Warriors to one run on four hits over 5.2 innings of work to go along with five strikeouts. Josh Colon was handed the loss after allowing one run and issuing three walks over 0.2 innings.
The Warriors were held to just two hits going into the bottom of the sixth when Piripavel led off the frame with a triple to give ESU a scoring opportunity. Kauffman produced a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the next at-bat which allowed Piripavel to race home and give the Warriors the 1-0 lead.
Mansfield responded with their own run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1. With one out, Jake Hass tripled to right center field before being driven in by a base knock from Dylan Mercedes to even the score.
In the home half of the inning, Paolini led off with a walk before advancing to second on a balk. After
Brainy Rojas was intentionally walk,
Jake Packer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mansfield made a pitching change but that didn't impact Kauffman's approach at the plate, who sent the ball over the shallow playing right fielder's head to win the game for the Warriors.
