MANSFIELD, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team completed the season sweep of Mansfield with 16-9 and 7-5 victories over the Mounties on Monday afternoon at Joseph Shaute Field. The Warriors' offense combined for 23 runs on 20 hits in the doubleheader to help extend their win streak to five consecutive games.
ESU improved to 9-3 overall and holds the PSAC East's best record at 7-1. Mansfield drops to 2-10 on the season and 1-7 in conference play.
The Warriors were ranked at No. 4 in this week's NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll.
Redshirt junior
Tommy Dunleavy paced the Warriors' offense, which hit four home runs across the pair of games, by finishing the day 4-for-6 with two homers, seven runs batted in, four runs scored, two walks and a pair of steals. Redshirt freshman
Tim Haverstick went 4-for-8 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Brent Francisco (2-0) earned the victory in game one and
Connor Johnson (1-1) was credited with the win in game two.
CJ Gonzales picked up his second save of the season after firing 2.0 scoreless innings in the second game victory.
Game 1 Recap
Trailing 3-2 after the first inning, the East Stroudsburg University baseball team scored 14 runs across the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pick up the 16-9 victory over Mansfield in game one of the doubleheader.
The Warriors smashed four home runs, seven players collected at least one hit and Dunleavy, Haverstick and
Logan Stirr each recorded a multi-hit game. Stirr finished 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored while Dunleavy was 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs, three runs scored and one stolen base. Haverstick went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Sirwalter Melendez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and
Joey Paolini crushed a grand slam to centerfield two innings later.
Francisco earned the victory after a allowing four runs on four hits and fanning a season-high five batters over 4.1 innings of work.
JP Nolan surrendered one run on one hit and struck out one over 1.1 innings of relief.
The Warriors wasted no time taking the lead as they scored two runs on one hit in the top of the first inning. The bases were loaded with no outs after
Brainy Rojas and
Ben Piripavel each worked a walk, followed by
Carson Freeman getting hit by a pitch. With one out, Dunleavy grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Rojas for the first run of the game.
Logan Stirr extended the Warriors' lead to 2-0 on an RBI single to right field that scored Piripavel.
Mansfield responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on two hits to take the lead. A hit by pitch and walk set up Tyler Melko's RBI single to right center for the Mounties first run of the game. Ben Osborne ground out to push across the tying run and Zachary Shertzer delivered a base knock to give Mansfield the lead.
ESU regained the lead in the top of the fourth with four runs all coming on three home runs. Dunleavy and Stirr led off the inning with back-to-back homers to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead. With one out, Paolini worked a one out walked, and Melendez followed with a two-run shot to left field to extend ESU's lead to 6-3.
The Warriors offense sent 10 players to the plate in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on four hits to push their lead to 12-3.
Brock Kauffman doubled to lead off the inning, Freeman worked a walk, and the pair completed a successful double steal before being knocked in a single from Dunleavy to make the score 8-3. After stealing second, Dunleavy advanced home on an RBI single up the middle from Stirr to push the lead to 9-3. Following a Haverstick double, Stirr and Haverstick were both able to race home after a pair of wild pitches. Rojas pushed across the Warriors' 12th run of the game on a sacrifice fly that allowed Paolini to score, who reached on a walk.
Mansfield answered with one run in the home half of the inning to cut the Warriors' lead to 12-4. Francisco allowed a hit and walked a pair to load the bases before a sacrifice fly pushed across the run. Nolan replaced Francisco with two outs and runners on second and third to record the final out of the frame.
ESU added four more runs on a Paolini grand slam in the top half of the sixth to extend their lead to 16-4.
Jerome Repetz and Dunleavy worked back to back walks to open the inning before a single by Haverstick loaded the bases for Paolini, who deposited the ball over the center field fence. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Nate Cotton doubled home Jake Hass to make the score 16-5.
The Mounties would not go away easy as they scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 16-9 in favor of the Warriors. Tom Reisigner came on to pitch the frame but only recorded two outs as he allowed four runs on three hits while issuing three walks.
Jack Nielsen recorded the final out of the game on a strike out to hold on for the ESU victory.
Mansfield starter Eric Gustofson took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits over 3.1 innings of work. Justin Marykwas allowed five runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning and Jordan Cowen surrendered three runs while issuing four walks over 1.0 innings. Lorenzo Febbo was responsible for two runs on two hits over 1.0 innings.
Game 2 Recap
ESU found themselves trailing 5-2 entering the top of the fourth inning but scored five runs on five hits to take a 7-5 advantage. The Warriors pitching staff allowed just four hits over the final four innings to hold on for the victory and earn the season sweep of the Mounties.
Johnson earned the victory after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and striking out four over 4.0 innings. Redshirt sophomore
Mike Yates pitched 1.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits while fanning a pair.
CJ Gonzales picked up his second save of the season after firing 2.0 scoreless innings, surrendering one hit, one walk and punching out four.
Similar to game one, the Warriors jumped out to a lead in the top half of the first inning. Piripavel led off with a single before Freeman doubled to drive in the redshirt freshman and make the score 1-0.
The Mounties answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead. After an error allowed Brittain Shander to reach, Tyler Melko delivered a two-run home run to center field to give Mansfield a 2-1 advantage.
ESU manufactured one run on a hit in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Repetz was hit by a pitch and Haverstick singled down the left field line before two straight outs for the Warriors. After Piripavel worked a walked, Repetz was able to race home on a ball that got past the catcher to tie the game.
Mansfield responded again in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs on three hits to regain a 4-2 advantage. In the bottom of the third, Melko connected on his second home run of the game to extend the Mounties' lead to 5-2.
The Warriors' offense came alive in the top of the fifth inning as they took advantage of a Mansfield error to score five runs on five hits and take a 7-5 lead.
Jeremy Piatkiewicz drew a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score after back to back base hits from Piripavel and Freeman to make the game 5-3. With one out and Dunleavy trailing 0-2 in the count, the redshirt junior delivered a three-run blast to center to give the Warriors the lead 6-5. Repetz got on with a base hit and Haverstick followed with a doubled which allowed Repetz to score and extend ESU's lead.
The Mounties were threating in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and runners on first and second, but Gonzales entered for Yates, recording a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to keep Mansfield from cutting into the lead.
