Almoney Sets Freshman Record, Carney Sits Fourth in Decathlon, Ellis Finishes Second in 10,000m on Day One of PSAC Championships

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Isaac Almoney broke the freshman record in the hammer, freshman Caleb Carney sits in fourth place through five events of the decathlon and senior Casey Ellis finished as the runner-up in the 10,000m to highlight the East Stroudsburg University men's track and field team on the opening day of competition at the 2021 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

In the 10,000m run, Ellis placed second for the Warriors with the ninth-best time in school history at 31:07.12. The Rome, Pa. native led through the first 8,800m before Shippensburg's Chayce Macknair pulled ahead to ultimately win the race.

Almoney delivered a throw of 53.13m in the hammer to break the freshman record and earn a fourth place finish in the event for the Warriors. The Hanover, Pa. native eclipsed the record of 52.50m set by All-American Travis Toth back in 2012. Junior Daryn Blackwell finished eighth for ESU with a mark of 52.08m.

Carney paced the Warriors through the first five events of the decathlon as he recorded 3200 points. He opened the day by running a personal-best time of 10.41 seconds in the 100m dash to finish fourth and followed up with a personal-best leap in the long jump at 5.92m. Carney continued his personal-best stretch by recording a mark of 9.38m in the shot put to take fifth.

The freshman would go on to take second in the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.85m and he capped off his day with a fourth place finish in the 400m with a personal-best time of 51.61 seconds.

The five remaining events (110m hurdles, 1500m, discus, pole vault and javelin) will be completed on Friday morning beginning at 10 a.m. Carney's personal-best point total in the decathlon is 5290 points, which he logged at the Mondschein Multi at Kutztown in April.

Also competing in the decathlon for the Warriors is sophomore Daniel Daley and junior Eric Krzyzaniak. Daley is in seventh with 2991 points while Krzyzaniak is right behind in eighth with 2983 points. Daley (11.64, 6.31m, 54.06) and Krzyzaniak (11.56, 6.13m, 52.95) both recorded personal-best times/marks in the 100m, long jump and 400m.

The Warriors are back in action tomorrow at Seth Grove Stadium beginning at 10 a.m. with the remaining events of the decathlon. Long jump, discus and high jump start at noon and running events get underway at 1:05 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay prelims.
