Warriors Swimming Takes Third against Bloomsburg, Millersville

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg University swimming team was back in action on Saturday afternoon, facing off against Bloomsburg and Millersville at Nelson Field House. The Warriors placed third in the meet, finishing with 409 points.

Notables

  • The three teams competed in 13 total events.
  • Bloomsburg took first in the meet with 1,023 points, while Millersville totaled 595 points for second place.
  • ESU's Naihomy Garcia posted a near PSAC qualifying time in the 50-yd freestyle, grabbing second place in the event with a time of 26.03. Garcia just missed the conference meet qualifying time of 25.89, as she placed second of 12 in the sixth event.   

How it Happened

  • Event 1 - 200-yd medley freestyle
  • Event 2 - 200-yd freestyle
    • Madison Tafe placed fifth to lead ESU with a time of 2:04.10. The time was a personal best for Tafe.
  • Event 3 - 100-yd backstroke
    • The Warriors did not swim in the 100-yd backstroke.
  • Event 4 - 100-yd breaststroke
    • Julia Harnish was the line Warrior represented in the 100-yd breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:16.06 for fifth place among the eight swimmers. The mark added 16 points to the Warriors score.
  • Event 5 - 200-yd butterfly
    • Avery Fohring finished in third place in the 200-yd butterfly, nearing a PSAC time with a mark of 2:21.78. Sarah Luigard also competed in the event and finished sixth with a mark of 2:24.99.
  • Event 6 - 50-yd freestyle
    • Garcia's season-best performance came next, as the Walden, N.Y. native was just .14 of a second away from qualifying for the conference meet.  Billings (7th, 27.03), Erin Brandeburg (9th, 27.64) and Gabby Ciesla (12th, 28.89) also swam for ESU.
  • Event 7 - 100-yd freestyle
    • Garcia was up again, taking the top spot for the team with a seventh-place performance with a time of 57.99. Johnson (11th, 59.02) and Billings (59.29, 12th) also swam in the event that featured 15 swimmers.
  • Event 8 - 200-yd backstroke
    • Three competitors (Two from Bloomsburg and one from Millersville) swam in the 200-yd backstroke, as the Huskies took the top two positions.
  • Event 9 - 200-yd breaststroke
    • The ninth event of the afternoon was highlighted by Luigard, who posted a time of 2:44.83 for fifth place. Harnish added a time of 2:47.58 for seventh.
  • Event 10 - 500-yd freestlye
    • Tafe earned ESU a top-three finish in the 500-yd freestyle, with the Sayville, N.Y. native taking third with a time of 5:39.13. Nina Marchese (5:52.40) and Ciesla (6:18.16) earned sixth and seventh place.
  • Event 11 - 100-yd butterfly
    • Fohring, the lone Warrior to compete in the 100-yd butterfly earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:04.15.
  • Event 12 - 200-yd individual medley
    • A time of 2:23.97 was good enough for sixth-place in the 200-yd individual medley for Luigard.
  • Event 13 - 200-yd freestyle relay
    • ESU had two relay teams in the final event of the day, with Billings, Marchese, Garcia and Johnson combining for a time of 1:46.29 for fifth place.

Up Next

  • The Warriors are back at Koehler Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 5 for the annual ESU Invitational. The Warriors will honor seniors Sarah Luigard and Emma Billings prior to competing against Millersville, Kutztown and Lehigh.
  • The Warriors will then head to York to compete in the PSAC Championships from February 16-19 at the Graham Aquatic Center.
