Turocy Punches ESU’s Ticket to Postseason with Late Penalty Kick Goal

ESU will host West Chester on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the PSAC Quarterfinal round

EAST STROUDSBURG – Needing three points in the conference standings to punch its ticket to the PSAC Tournament, East Stroudsburg University forward Bradley Turocy buried his second penalty kick attempt of the evening in the 83rd minute to lift the Warriors to a 1-0 win over Shippensburg on Saturday evening at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

The Warriors (8-8-2, 7-3-2 PSAC East), who earn the second seed in the PSAC East by holding the tiebreaker over West Chester will now host the three-seed Golden Rams on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The Raiders finish the 2022 season with a 4-8-4, 0-8-4 in conference play.

The Warriors would not have qualified for the PSAC Tournament if the game ended in a tie, with Millersville's 1-0 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday night.

Notables

  • Turocy actually scored a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, but had to retake the shot with the officials saying ESU entered the box early. The Shippensburg goalkeeper made the save on the redo, but the Bethlehem native got redemption with another penalty kick attempt with less than eight minutes remaining in ESU's season. The 2021 All-PSAC Second Team selection buried his second official attempt to send the Warriors into the postseason.
  • Shippensburg had a goal that was disallowed after a late offsides call in the first half.
  • ESU led 24-9 on shots and 13-3 on shots on goal.
  • Both squads totaled four corner kicks.
  • The chippy contest featured four yellow cards, including two on Shippensburg's Spencer Siverling for the automatic red card.
  • The goal for Turocy was his first this season and his 17th of his career as a Warrior.
  • Warrior goalkeeper Helgi Hermannsson made three saves in his third win of the season and his fifth shutout over his past six contests. SU goalkeeper Matt Riley made 12 saves in the loss.
  • ESU defeated West Chester in both matchups earlier this season to earn the tiebreaker over the Golden Rams. The Warriors needed three points against Shippensburg to reach 23 points on the season. With the win over Bloomsburg, Millersville's 22 points would have finished ahead of ESU's potential 21 with a tie or 20 with a loss.
  • The game was senior night at EIler-Martin Stadium, as the ESU athletic department honored Hubert Herrera and team manager Brian Curci prior to the game.

How It Happened
