MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Trailing 20-0 in the second half, the East Stroudsburg University football team came back to cut the deficit to a single possession following redshirt sophomore quarerback Aaron Tobias' first two career touchdown passes, but ultimately fell to Millersville, 20-14, on Saturday afternoon at Biemesder Stadium.
With the loss, the Warriors drop to 2-4, 1-2 in the PSAC East, while the Marauders (2-4, 2-1 PSAC East) pick up their second consecutive win.
Notables
- The Warriors used all three available quarterbacks, with Aaron Tobias (9-14, 182 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT) having the most success in the second half. He recorded his first two career touchdown passes to jump start the ESU offense, finding tight end Jonathan Post for a 24-yd receiving touchdown and Beau Heyser for a 97-yd touchdown. Heyser's long touchdown is tied for the third-longest in school history, matching Ray Wagner's 97-yd connection with Robert Bleiler. Matt Soltes (Bleiler) and Bret Comp (Ken Kopetchny) each tallied 99-yd touchdown passes.
- Heyser led ESU with five receptions for 130 yards and the aforementioned touchdown. Post tallied three catches for 52 yards, while true freshman Justin Cook posted 46 yards on three catches.
- Devante Robinson led ESU with 25 yards rushing.
- Defensively, Shavar Hussett recorded the first interception of the season and fourth of his career.
- Jahan Worth (16 tackles) and Sergei Felizor (12 tackles) combined for 28 tackles, while Malachi Bowman and Huessett totaled eight each.
- The Marauders were limited to under 100 yards passing (11-18, 95 yards), but was able to find success running the ball. The Marauders rushed 52 times for 269 yards for an average of 5.2 yards. Jaheim Morris led the way with 156 yards rushing and a touchdown.
- ESU struggled on 3rd down offensively, converting 3-of-13 opportunities.
How It Happened
- The Warriors forced a punt on the first drive of the day. ESU was pinned deep on their side of the field. A long pass play on 3rd down was incomplete.
- A short 19-yd ESU punt put the Marauders in excellent field position for their second drive on the ESU 30-yd line. Following a 20-yd rush, 'Ville was able to score the first points of the game. After a delay of game penalty, Robert Footman Jr. found Eli Workinger for a 9-yd touchdown to lift 'Ville to a 7-0 lead.
- Sattamini booted a much better punt on his next opportunity, sending a 53-yarder down the field. Millersville countered with a 65-yarder after a short drive. Sattamini booted his third punt, As the teams continued to trade punts.
- On 'Ville's next drive, Hussett was able to snag an interception on the first play to five ESU possession near midfield.
- The Marauders entered the locker room with momentum, after putting together a five play, 65-yd drive that ended with a 15-yd touchdown run. A fumble on ESU's next drive resulted in a Marauder 44-yd field goal, while the Warriors could not put through a 49-yd attempt through the up-rights as time expired.
- At half, ESU held Millersville to just 26 yards through the air, but the Marauders produced 187 yards on the ground.
- Like the first half, the second half featured punts to begin the third quarter. A Warrior fumble gave Millersville possession on ESU's 44-yd line, as the Marauders added a 33-yd field goal to take a 20-0 lead.
- Aaron Tobias took over quarterback duties in hopes of sparking the Warrior offense. ESU's promising drive ended in seven points, with Tobias finding Post for a 24-yd completion and a touchdown to cut the deficit to 20-7.
- With the 4th quarter just beginning, Tobias found Heyser for the 97-yd touchdown to slice the deficit to six.
- ESU forced a punt and took over possession with a chance to take to lead with 4:11 left. On 4th and 14, Tobias' pass was intercepted at 2:12. The Marauders were able to run out the clock and preserve the win with after an offsides penalty.
