Ryan Weise tied the single-game record for three-pointers made with eight to propel the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team past Shaw, 64-51, on Sunday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium to wrap up the CIAA/PSAC Challenge at Pucillo Gymnasium.
With the victory, the Warriors begin the year 2-0 for the first time since the 2016-17 season while the Bears fall to 0-2.
Weise posted her second straight double-double of the season with 30 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists, four steals and a block. The Allentown N.J. went 8-for-10 from behind the arc to tie Maryellen Onofre's single-game record set in 2006 and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Through the first two team games, Weise is averaging 30.5 points, 11.5 rebounds 5.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 1.5 blocks while shooting a remarkable 17-of-20 (85.0%) from the floor, 12-of-15 (80.0%) from three point territory and 12-of-15 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
Notables
- Playing in 39 minutes, graduate transfer Shyla Sanford stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists
- Sophomore Izzy Vogel added eight points, seven rebounds and two assists
- Junior Leah Pishock as well as sophomores Carley Adams and Corrin Gill each scored four points
- Shaw had eight different scorers and were led by a double-double from Brittney Seymour with 15 points and 11 rebounds
- Mackenzie Pollard and Makayla Sutton each had eight points apiece while Tanatja added seven points and eight rebounds
- ESU finished the game 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the field and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from beyond the arc while Shaw was only 18-of-58 (31.0%) from the floor and 2-of-12 (16.7) from three
- The Warriors were a solid 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the free throw line compared to the Bears, who went 13-of-27 (48.1%)
- ESU held the lead for nearly all 40 minutes with their largest advantage coming at 23 points
How It Happened
- In the first four minutes of the game, the Warriors raced out to an 8-0 lead until Shaw scored a pair of buckets. ESU proceeded to go on a 14-6 run over the rest of the first quarter which included four three pointers from Weise to put the Warriors up 22-10.
- Neither team could get going offensively to begin the second quarter as the Warriors outscored the Bears, 4-3, to extend their lead to 26-13 at the 5:12 mark. After Shaw made the score 28-17, Weise proceeded to outscore the Bears, 10-3, over the final four minutes to push ESU's advantage to 38-20 at the break. In the first half, Weise went 5-of-6 from three and 4-of-4 from the free throw for 22 points to go with nine rebounds and two assists.
- After the Bears scored the first two points of the second half, the Warriors went on a 7-0 run to push their advantage to 23 points at 45-22. Shaw responded with a 9-2 spurt over the next two minutes to cut their deficit to 47-31 at the 3:01 mark. However, ESU outscored the Bears 8-2 down the stretch with three pointers from Sanford and Weise to hold a 55-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- Through the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, the Bears outscored the Warriors 15-3 to trim ESU's advantage to 58-48. The Warriors would ultimately hold on down the stretch, going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line to earn the 64-51 victory.
