Weise Powers Women’s Basketball to Third Straight Victory at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – For the second consecutive game, graduate student Ryan Weise tied the single-game record for three-pointers after knocking down eight in the Warriors' 70-62 victory over Staten Island on Saturday afternoon at the Sports and Recreation Center.

Despite trailing by as many as seven points in the second half, the Warriors open the season with their third straight victory to improve to 3-0 while the Dolphins drop to 0-4.

In just 29 minutes of action, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week recorded 28 points, going 8-of-10 from three and 4-of-4 from the free throw line, while adding seven rebounds and seven assists.

Through the first three games, Weise is averaging 29.7 points, 10 rebounds 6.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocks while shooting 25-of-30 (83.3%) from the field, 20-of-25 (80.0%) from beyond the arc and 19-of-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line.

Notables
  • Shyla Sanford was once again the Warriors' second leading scoring as the graduate student added 16 points (6-of-9 FG, 4-of-7 3FG) as well as seven rebounds, four assists and a steal
     
  • Playing in 24 minutes off the bench, sophomore Corrin Gill scored a career-high 12 points to go along with three assists, two steals and a rebound
     
  • Sophomore Izzy Vogel stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals
     
  • Sophomore Leah Pishock and Cassidy Saylor combined for five points and nine rebounds
     
  • The Dolphins had nine different scorers, led by Noemia Massingue with 15 points and four rebounds. Kyra Rose added nine point, eight rebounds and two assists while Ashley Lambert and Amaya Jenkins each poured in eight points
     
  • The Warriors continued their hot shooting to begin the season, finishing 23-of-56 (41.1%) from the floor and 12-of-22 (54.5%) from three-point territory while Staten Island was 20-of-56 (35.7) overall and 6-of-16 (37.5%) from beyond the arc
     
  • Neither team was efficient from the free throw line as the Dolphins went 16-of-23 (69.9%) compared to 12-of-22 (54.5%) for the Warriors
     
  • ESU and Staten Island each had seven steals and a block but the Warriors committed less turnovers compared to the Dolphins, 17-13
How It Happened
  •  After the Dolphins scored the first two points of the games, the Warriors went on a 9-1 run to pull ahead, 9-3. Over the next 5:26, Staten Island proceed to outscore ESU by three points to make the score, 15-12, however Weise knocked down a three pointer in the closing seconds to give the Warriors a 18-12 lead.
     
  • The Warriors continued their hot shooting to open the second quarter, going 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc to push their advantage to double digits at 26-16. Staten Island caught fire during the final five minutes of the first half, outscoring the Warriors 16-4, which included a 10-0 run to grab a 32-30 at the break.
     
  • The Dolphins carried their momentum over to begin the second half, scoring the first five points to stretch their lead to 37-30. However, the Warriors answered with an 8-0 run, which included three-pointers from Sanford and Weise to put ESU back in front, 38-37. After neither team scored for nearly three minutes, ESU continued their run with nine straight points to stretch their edge to 47-37. The Dolphins snaped an eight-minute scoring drought with a layup and three pointer over the final minute to trail ESU, 49-42, going into the fourth.
     
  • ESU opened the quarter on a 9-2 run, which included a pair of three-pointers from Weise to give the Warriors' their largest lead of the afternoon at 58-44. Following a Staten Island timeout, the teams traded buckets but the score at 64-49 in favor of ESU, the Dolphins proceeded to score nine consecutive points over the next 1:12 which cut their deficit to six at 66-60. However, Weise iced the game for the Warriors as she knocked down all four free throws to secure the 70-62 win.
