Women’s Basketball Drops Home Opener to Jefferson

EAST STROUDSBURG – Despite graduate student Ryan Weise tying the single-game record for three pointers made for the third consecutive game, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped their home opener to Jefferson, 80-70, on Tuesday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 overall while the Rams remain undefeated at 5-0.

With the help of 21 points in the second half, Weise finished with 30 points for the third time this season and the fifth time in career wearing the red and black. Weise also added six rebounds, seven assists and two steals while shooting the lights out again, going 11-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-10 from behind the arc for the third consecutive game.

Weise continues to wreak havoc on opposing defenses through the first four games as the Allentown, N.J. native is averaging 29.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 2.8 steals and 0.8 blocks while shooting an unconscious 36-of-44 (81.8%) from the field, 28-of-35 (80.0%) from three point territory and 19-of-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line.

How It Happened
  • Neither ESU nor Jefferson could find their shot to begin the game as the teams combined to go 4-of-16 headed into the media break with the Warriors leading 6-4. Out of the timeout, the Rams outscored the Warriors, 6-2, the rest of the way to pull ahead 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.

  • Gill regained the lead for the Warriors to open the second quarter as the sophomore converted a pair of layups to make the score 12-10. The teams would trade points over the next four minutes as the Rams jumped back ahead 17-16 going into the media timeout. The Warriors then went in front at 21-19 with a three pointer from Weise and a layup from Saylor until Jefferson used a 10-5 run over the final 2:33 of the first half for a 29-26 lead.

  • The Rams carried that momentum over into the second half, stretching their advantage to 35-26, but the Warriors answered with a 9-1 spurt to knot the score at 35-35. Weise would regain the lead for the Warriors at 38-36 on a three pointer until four quick points from the Rams made the score 49-38 in their favor. With ESU then in front 41-40, Jefferson would outscore the Warriors 9-4 across the last two-plus minutes for a 49-45 edge at the end of the third quarter.

  • Jefferson came out firing in the fourth quarter, ripping off a 11-3 run to build a 12 point lead at 60-48, but not before the Warriors responded with seven straight points over the next 1:28 to cut their deficit to 60-55. It was all Jefferson after that as the Rams proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to build their largest advantage of the game at 15 points, 70-55. Weise and the Warriors were not done yet as a five three points in a span of three minutes trimmed Jefferson's lead to as little as eight points but the Rams ultimately hung on for the 80-70 victory.
