Seton Hill Pulls Away in Third Quarter to Defeat Women’s Basketball

GREENSBURG – Being outscored by 12 points in the third quarter (28-16) proved to be the difference as the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped their first conference game of the season to Seton Hill, 69-54, on Sunday afternoon at the Katherine Mabis McKenna Center.

The Warriors drop consecutive games for the first time this season, going to 6-3 and 2-1 in the PSAC while the Griffins win their fifth consecutive game to improve to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Notables
  • Offensively, the Warriors were paced by a trio of double digit scorers in graduate students Shyla Sanford and Ryan Weise as well as sophomore Gwenn Sabato
     
  • Sanford did a little bit of everything on a team-high 13 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and four steals
     
  • In an off day of shooting for Wesie, the Allentown, N.J. native added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals
     
  • Sabato recorded a career-high 10 points (4-of-6 FG, 2-of-3 3FG) in 11 minutes off the bench
     
  • Across 13 minutes off the bench, freshman Caitlin Marten posted career-highs with seven points and seven rebounds
     
  • ESU struggled shooting the ball, finishing 17-of-51 (33.3%) from the field and 4-of-12 (33.3%) from three point territory
     
  • The Griffins went 22-of-51 (43.1%) from the floor and knocked down one additional shot from beyond the arc, going 5-of-21 (23.8%)
     
  • Seton Hill featured a balanced offensive attack as four players scored in double figures led by Hallie Cowan with 16 points. Helene Cowan (11 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals) and Alie Seto (11 points, seven rebounds, three steaks, two assists, two blocks) each filled up the stat sheet for the Griffins while Courtney Tomas added 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists
     
  • The teams combined to shoot 51 free throws as the Griffins held the edge over the Warriors, going 20-of-27 (74.1%) compared to 16-of-24 (66.7%)
     
  • Turnovers were dead even at 19 a piece, but Seton Hill recorded more steals (10-9) and blocks (5-1)
How It Happened
  • The Griffins opened the game on a 12-0 run, making five of their first six shots until the Warriors answered with six straight points to make the score 12-6. ESU continued their run, trimming their deficit to three, but Seton Hill ultimately took a 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.
     
  • After the teams traded the first eight points of the second quarter, Seton Hill went on a 6-0 run to take a 27-15 advantage into the media timeout. The Warriors proceeded to outpace the Griffins, 7-1, over the final 4:44 to make the score 28-22 in favor of Seton Hill at the break.
     
  • The Griffins regained a nine point edge at 33-24 less than two minutes into the second half, but the Warriors quickly cut the score to 33-29 with a 5-0 run. Seton Hill proceeded go on an 11-0 run in just over a minute to grab a 44-29 lead. Over the final 4:38 of the period, the Griffins notched three more points than ESU (12-9), to take a 56-38 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
     
  • The teams went back and forth to begin the final period with ESU slightly outscoring the Griffins, 8-6, to make the score 62-46 going into the media timeout. Following the break, ESU would only get as close to 13 points (67-54) as the final score was 69-54 in favor of Seton Hill.
