EAST STROUDSBURG -- A career-matching outburst from Lakeem McAliley led six double-figure East Stroudsburg University men's basketball scorers in an 116-97 win over Mansfield on Wednesday evening inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (18-7, 16-6 PSAC) extend their win streak to five games on senior night and its final home regular season game. The Mountaineers drop to 4-23, 3-17 in league action.
McAliley matched his season-best scoring output of 29 points (vs. Molloy), shooting an efficient 29 points in just 21 minutes on the court. He made 13-of-16 field goal attempts, grabbing 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double performance of his redshirt freshman season.
For the third consecutive game, Justin Paz distributed 10-plus assists, scoring 14 points and tallying 10 dimes, He also grabbed six rebounds and four steals to stuff the stat sheet.
Notables
- Joining McAliley and Paz in double-figures was Marc Rodriguez (4-10 3PT), who posted 20-plus points for the third time this season with an even 20 points against the Mounties.
- On his senior night, Troy Jones posted 18 points, seven assists, three rebounds and three steals.
- Carlos Pepin and Mike Millsip each tallied 11 points. Pepin recorded five assists, while Millsip made 5-of-6 attempts on the evening
- Paz is the first Warrior since at least 2001-02 (when single game records are available) to record 10-plus assists in three consecutive contests. The Allentown native recorded 10 dimes Shepherd, 11 against Lock Haven and had 10 against Mansfield. Matt Tobin (2011-15) had a six-game stretch where he totaled 10-plus assists four times in the 2014-15 season. Over his last three games, Paz has tallied 31 assists with just three total turnovers against Shepherd, Lock Haven and Mansfield.
- ESU has now recorded 100-plus points in back-to-back games. The Warriors last accomplished the feat against Cheyney (110) and Felician (104) during the 2019-20 season.
- The ESU athletic department honored seniors Troy Jones, Tim Uzor and team manager Ryan Sherlock prior to the game for senior night.
- The 213 points in the contest is tied for the fifth most in program history with a 120-93 game at home against Millersville during the 1967-68 season.
How it Happened
- Before the first media timeout, both teams combined to score 27 points, as ESU held a seven-point lead at 17-10. After its advantage dipped to four, the Warriors built at double-digit lead at 27-15 with 12:43 left. Both squads constantly scored, as ESU's advantage fluctuated between six and 17 points throughout the opening half. Ultimately, the Warriors held a 61-51 lead at halftime.
- The Warriors extended the lead to 20 at 75-55 with 17:02 remaining following a Pepin layup. After seeing its lead drop to 11 at 88-77, the Warriors took full control, with a 22-7 run to grab a game-high 26-point lead with 4:18 to go. MU scored 13 of the final 19 points, but the Warriors prevailed with the 116-97 win over the Mounties.
