Bloomsburg Hangs on to Defeat Women’s Basketball

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team cut Bloomsburg's advantage to seven points late in the fourth quarter, but the Huskies were able to hang on for the 53-41 victory on Tuesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors fall to 2-19 overall and 1-17 in the PSAC while the Huskies win their fourth straight game to move to 16-8 on the season and 14-4 in the conference.

Bloomsburg sweeps the season series against ESU for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

ESU found themselves trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half but were able to cut the Huskies' advantage to 46-39 with 2:48 remaining. However, Bloomsburg's Meghan Corridoni knocked down seven free throws over the last 2:21 to ice game the game for the Huskies.

Notables

- Ryan Weise finished with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals

- Leah Pishock grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with two points and two assists

- In 28 minutes off the bench, Katie Geisler added eight points, six rebounds and two assists

- ESU finished the game at 31.5% (17-54) from the floor and 44.4% (4-9) from the three-point line

- In a poor shooting third quarter the Warriors were 1-of-10 (10.0%)

- Bloomsburg was led by Corridoni, who finished with a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds which including going 11-of-14 from the free throw line. Emma Saxton contributed 11 points, four rebounds, seven assists and two steals

- The Huskies shot just 37.3% (19-51) from the floor and were 1-of-10 (10.0%) from behind the arc

- Bloomsburg held a considerable advantage at the free throw line, going 14-of-19 (73.7%) while ESU was just 3-of-3 (100%)

How It Happened

- Turnovers plagued both ESU and Bloomsburg to open the game as the teams combined for five headed into the media with the score at 8-4 in favor of the Huskies. Over the final 4:55 of the first quarter, the Warriors would go on to outscore the Huskies 6-4 to find themselves trailing 12-10 headed into the second.

-  The Warriors tied the game at 12-12 to open the second quarter and traded buckets with the Huskies until Weise converted a three-pointer at the 5:24 mark to give ESU their first lead of the game at 22-19. From that point on, Bloomsburg would outscore ESU 9-3 and hold them scoreless over the final 3:22 of the quarter to take a 28-24 lead at the half.

- After Bloomsburg extended their lead to begin the second half, Cassie Ksiazek knocked down a pair of free throws at the 7:24 mark to snap nearly a six minute scoring drought between halfs for the Warriors. With the score at 30-26, the Huskies proceeded to use a 10-2 run over the remainder of the third quarter to push their advantage to 40-28 with 10 minutes to go.

- Claire Courter provided a spark off the bench to begin the fourth quarter as a pair of three-pointers helped trim Bloomsburg edge to 44-36 with just under seven minutes remaining. After both teams went scoreless for over three minutes, Weise converted a trey to make the score 46-39 but clutch free throws down the stretch from the Huskies helped secure the win.

Following the bye weekend, the Warriors are back at Koehler Fieldhouse on Wednesday, February 16 for their second to last home game of the year against Mansfield at 5:30 p.m.
