KISSIMEE, Fla. -- It was a successful spring break trip for the East Stroudsburg University softball team, as the Warriors closed the week with wins in nine-consecutive matchups, concluding the trip to the Sunshine State with wins over Notre Dame College (W, 9-6) and Nyack W, 8-0) on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors improve to 13-1 on the season, marking its best start in program history through 14 games. Both the 1976 and 1977 teams began their season with a 12-2 record.
ESU's final two games of the trip against Pitt Johnstown and Saint Michael's were canceled due to inclement weather.
Notables
- The Warriors blasted 24 hits over the two games on Friday, as Sofia Cecchin and Molly Nies each put four balls in gaps for hits to lead the team.
- Ashley Spencer led the Warriors with six RBIs in the two contests, with smacking three hits. Denva Shaw-Tait also registered three hits against the Falcons and Warriors.
- Brooke McKeown knocked in three runs on Friday on two hits, while Shaw-Tait and Lexi Wright also collected RBIs.
- The Warrior pitching staff held opponents to a a 3.50 ERA, with Katie Zaun (3-1) and Paige Zigmund (5-0) leading the way. Along with Madison Chapman, the trio held NDC and Nyack to a .256 batting average and struck out nine in 12 innings. The staff conceded just two extra-base hits.
- Over the 10-game spring break in Florida, Spencer led the Warriors with a .414 average with 12 hits and 16 RBIs. The Warrior pitching staff of Zigmund, Zaun, Chapman, Morgan Chapman, Leigh Ann Jenkins, Mickayla Grow, and Alexa Hopper combined for a .221 batting average against and struck out 63 batters in 54 innings and posted a 2.52 ERA.
- ESU's nine-game winning streak is tied for the third longest in program history, matching the 1984 team's nine consecutive wins. The Warriors will need three additional wins to break the 1976's teams 11 game-winning streak.
- With 16 RBIs over the spring break trip, Spencer is now just two RBIs from breaking ESU Hall of Famer Jen Veronesi's record of 91 career RBIs.
How it Happened vs. Notre Dame College
- NDC took the first lead of the game, on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 1st. The contest which featured 15 runs, began as a pitchers duel, as no additional runs were scored until the top of the 5th. ESU tied the contest as Nies would send an RBI single to score Wright. After a lineout, the Warriors took their first lead on an RBI single from Cecchin, scoring Nies.
- The Falcons countered in the home half of the fifth frame, putting a four-spot on three hits. NDC loaded the bases for Alexi Maciejowski, who smacked a grand slam to give the Falcons a 5-2 lead.
- ESU would get a run back in the top of the 6th, as a bunt single by McKeown with the bases loaded made it a 5-3 contest. Zigmund stranded a runner on third base with no outs, to keep the deficit at two runs.
- Down to its last three outs, the Warriors began the top of the 7th with a ground-rule double off the bat of Reilly Vicendese, as Cecchin would be hit by a pitch. Spencer would change the game with a go-ahead three-run home run, as ESU suddenly had a 6-5 lead. The Warriors added insurance with runs via an error, a wild pitch along with an RBI double from McKeown. As ESU now lead by four runs after entering the inning down by two.
- NDC would make things interesting in the bottom of the 7th, scoring a run off an RBI single. With the tying run at the plate and runners at the corners, Zigmund forced a ground out with two outs to preserve ESU's 12 win in 13 games in 2022.
How it Happened vs. Nyack
- ESU held Nyack to just two hits in the second game on Friday, putting up 12 of their base knocks in a n 8-0 five-inning contest. Nyack posted a pair of singles and a walk in the first inning, as Zaun stranded all three runners.
- ESU scored its first run in the bottom of the 2nd. Denva Shaw-Tait belted an RBI single to score Cecchin.
- The Warriors padded its lead to three with a pair of RBI singles from Nies and Spencer in the bottom of the 3rd.
- Up 3-0 in the fifth frame, ESU ended the contest with five runs on four hits and two errors. ESU scored runs via an RBI double from Cecchin, a two-run home run from Spencer, a Lexi Wright bases loaded walk and a game-ending ground out from McKeown.
- Zaun retired 13 consecutive batters, after allowing two singles and a walk in the first inning.
