Warriors Sweep USciences to Extend Winning Streak to 17 Entering PSAC Play

STROUDSBURG -- Another series, another dominant outcome for the East Stroudsburg University softball team, as the Warriors swept the University of the Sciences Devils (5-0, 12-4) on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at Creekview Park's Vigon International Field.

With the wins, the Warriors (21-1) extended their program-record winning streak to 17 and have now surpassed the 20-win threshold prior to conference action. The Devils have now fallen in their last seven games, dropping to 3-19 in 2022.

Notables

  • ESU was led offensively by Madison Chapman (4-7, 3 RBIs, HR, RBI 2B), Denva Shaw-Tait (4-7, 3 RBI, 2B), Sofia Cecchin (3-7, 2 RBI, 3 1B) and Abigail Weirich (2 RBI, 3B), who all provided multiple RBIs.
  • Along with Chapman's first career home run in game two, Shannon Edelman tallied her first career hits including her first career RBI double in game two. Gianna Coyle and Katherine Donaghue also registered an RBI for the Warriors.   
  • Katie Zaun (W, 6-1) picked up her sixth win of the season by pitching the final four innings of game one. She allowed just two hits and struck out five, extending her scoreless streak to 29. Zaun, the back-to-back PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, lowered her ERA to 1.28 and has allowed just five earned runs in 49.1 innings this season. She is holding opponents to a batting average of .177 so far during her freshman season.
  • Madison's sister, Morgan Chapman, allowed one hit in two innings to open game one in the no decision.
  • Paige Zigmund started game two and allowed just one hit in two innings of action. Jenkins (W, 5-0) pitched the final three innings of the mercy-ruled five-inning contest. She allowed four earned runs and six hits.    
  • The Warrior pitching staff boasted a 2.33 ERA on the day and held the opposition to bat just .217. ESU countered with a batting average of .400 against the Devils, outscoring the non-conference foe, 17-4.

How it Happened - Game One

  • The Warriors struck in their first at bats. After three singles to begin the contest, an RBI groundout from Weirich with one out put ESU on the scoreboard. Vicendese got a good jump off of the bat to score the run and avoid a fielder's choice.
  • Both teams struggled to put the ball in play throughout game one. The Warriors did not tally a hit after the first inning until the sixth inning.
  • The Devils threatened to score in the top of the 6th. After a two-out error by ESU, USciences attempted to score on a bloop infield single, but Zaun scooped the ball quickly and fired home to get the final out at the plate.
  • The Warriors took control of the contest in the top of the 6th. ESU registered four runs on five hits to grab a 5-0 lead heading into the seventh inning. Cecchin recorded an RBI single, Weirich smacked an RBI triple, Madison Chapman and Kate Donaghue each followed with RBI singles to account for the runs.
  • With a 5-0 lead, Zaun extended her strikeout streak to 29 by setting down the Devils in order to seal ESU's 16 consecutive and 20th overall win of 2022 in the seventh inning.  

How it Happened - Game Two

  • ESU scored at least two runs in all five innings of game two.
  • The Warriors started strong by putting up a three spot in the bottom of the 1st. All nine batters came to the plate, with ESU scoring two runs via a two-RBI double from Shaw-Tait. ESU added an additional run after a dropped third strike play allowed Rachel Seiverd to reach base. Shaw-Tait came around to score on the play. ESU held a three-run lead, as USciences stranded the bases loaded to avoid further damage.
  • Zigmund kept the Devils scoreless through her two innings of action, allowing just one hit.
  • The Warriors took control in the bottom of the 2nd, adding three additional runs to its score. A ground out followed by an error scored two runs, while a Chapman RBI double scored the sixth run of the ball game.
  • While ESU led 6-0, USciences scored their first run of the day in the top of the 3rd. With Jenkins now in the circle, a double, followed by a triple led to a run being scored. Jenkins stranded the runner on second base to limit the scoring to a single run.
  • A Cecchin single, turned into ESU runs scored in the bottom of the 3rd, after a USciences error in the outfield. which Edelman came around to score on the play. Shaw-Tait followed with an RBI single, extending the ESU lead to 8-1 after three frames.
  • The Devils did not go down without a fight, scoring runs on an RBI double along with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 4th. USciences trailed 8-4 after three and a half innings.
  • ESU lengthened its lead with Chapman's first career home run to lead off the bottom of the 4th. Later on in the fourth inning, an Edelman RBI double scored Addison Roche, who reached base via a walk. ESU held a six-run advantage at 10-4 after four innings.
  • Jenkins got the next three Devils out in order to open the fifth frame. ESU scored runs via a Chapman single to extend the Warrior lead to 11-4. Coyle ended the contest with an RBI single, reaching the eight run mercy-rule threshold at 12-4.

  • ESU opens PSAC conference play on Saturday, when the Warriors travel to Kutztown for a doubleheader.
