Warriors Sweep Monday Contests against Lake Erie, UMary

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- In its second day of game action at The Spring Games, the East Stroudsburg University softball team bounced back with a pair of wins over Lake Erie and UMary on Monday afternoon. The Warriors defeated Lake Erie, 6-4, and handed Mary a 6-2 loss to close the day.

ESU improves to 6-1 on the season, while the Storm fall to 0-3. The Marauders drop to 1-16.

Notables

  • Brooke McKeown (3-6), Sofia Cecchin (3-8) and Reilly Vicendese (3-8) led the Warriors with three hits a piece on the day. The trio combined to bat 9-24, collecting four RBIs and stole 13 bases without being caught.
  • Reilly Vicendese and Ashley Spencer each contributed three RBIs, while Cecchin and Kaitlyn Caleen also produced a run for ESU.
  • In the circle, ESU pitchers combined for a .50 ERA despite six opponent runs, as Lake Erie and Mary combined to score five unearned runs on five ESU errors. The Warriors totaled 10 strikeouts and issued just two walks, allowing a batting average of .236. Morgan Chapman earned her first victory this season, pitching the first four innings of game one. Leigh Ann Jenkins picked the win up in relief in game two, scattering five hits in four innings and allowed just one earned run.
  • On the day, ESU went a perfect 17-17 on stolen bases, including the aforementioned six from Cecchin, four from McKeown and three swipes by Vicendese.

How it Happened - vs. Lake Erie

  • The Warriors came back to defeat the Strom after trailing 4-0 after the first half inning. Lake Erie took advantage of two ESU errors and used a pair of hits to push across four runs.
  • The Warriors immediately got two runs back in its half of the first to cut the deficit to just two. McKeown started the contest with a single and eventually scored on a Cecchin single. The Italy native eventually scored on a wild pitch, as ESU trailed 4-2 after the first inning.
  • Both teams went scoreless until the home half of the third inning. ESU tied the contest after two hits and an error. Nies scored on a Spencer ground out, while Cecchin crossed the plate after a Storm error.
  • The Warriors grabbed its first lead of the game and took control in the bottom of the fifth frame. Cecchin reached base via a single and stole both second and third and crossed home plate on a passed ball to give ESU its first lead. Caleen came in clutch with RBI triple, scoring pinch runner Abigail Weirich.
  • That rounded out the scoring, as Paige Zimgund allowed just two hits over her three inning tenure to seal ESU's fifth victory in six games.

How it Happened - vs. Mary

  • After a scoreless first two innings, ESU would put up a four spot in the top of the 3rd on three hits and a Marauder error. Vicendese drove in a pair runs on a single, while Nies scored on an error to make it 3-0. Spencer capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI double, scoring Vicendese. Suddenly, ESU led 4-0.
  • Mary sent home a run in response in its half of the third frame, on a bunt, cutting the deficit to 4-1. The Marauders made it a two-run game in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single.  
  • The contest went scoreless until the top of the 7th, adding a pair of insurance runs. Vicendese beat out a bunt, which scored McKeown to retake a three-run advantage. Spencer drove in her third run of the afternoon on a single. Jenkins stranded a pair of Marauders on the corners in the bottom of the 7th, as the Warriors improve to 6-1 with a 6-2 victory over Mary.
