WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- After being no-hit in a 1-0 pitchers' duel in game one, Katherine Donaghue provided the offense in game two for the 25th ranked East Stroudsburg University softball team with a two-run home run to salvage as split (0-1, 2-1) against West Chester on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors (27-5, 4-4 PSAC East) picked up their 27th victory of the season with the split and are now 4-4 in PSAC East action. The Golden Rams are now 18-18 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Notables
- Donaghue's home run in game two marked her first round-tripper of the season and provided both of ESU's runs on the day.
- ESU totaled six hits in game two, with Denva Shaw-Tait, Sofia Cecchin, Molly Nies, Kaitlin Houser, and Addison Roche all recording singles.
- In the circle, Katie Zaun (8-4) suffered the loss in game one after allowing just three hits and a pair of walks in six innings of action. She recorded seven strikeouts and retired 20 of the 23 batters she faced on the day. The lone run she allowed was unearned and came in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single.
- In game two, Paige Zigmund (9-0) allowed two hits and an earned run in four innings of work. Leigh Ann Jenkins notched her third save of the season, closing out the final three innings by allowing just one hit and struck out three.
- Both teams struggled at the plate, with four runs produced combined in the two games. ESU hit .128 on the day, while WCU did not fair much better at .143 clip.
- With the split, ESU (4-4) currently sits sixth in the PSAC East halfway through its conference slate.
How It Happened - Game One
- As previously mentioned, both teams struggled offensively in game one, as ESU looked for a spark in the top of the 3rd inning after Madison Champman was hit by a pitch. She immediately stole second and advanced to third on a ground out but would be stranded after a foul out, a walk and a strikeout.
- Ashley Spencer drew a two-out walk in the top of the 4th, but would stranded there after a flyout.
- Zaun continued to pitch well, allowing her first hit in the bottom of the 5th on a leadoff single. Ultimately Zaun stranded the runner on second after a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts.
- The Golden Rams put the lone tally of the game on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th. After a groundout, Zaun allowed a single and then a Warrior error allowed the runner to advance to second. On the next play, WCU's Rittenbaugh connected on a single to center, which scored Melvin. Zaun settled down and forced a pop-out and ground out to avoid further damage.
- During its final at bats in the top of the 7th, the Warriors went down in order via a foul out, a ground out and a fly out, as WCU held on for the 1-0 win.
How It Happened - Game Two
- Like the first matchup, both squads struggled to put runners on base, with Zigmund allowing the first base runner of the game with a single in the bottom of 3rd. The Bethlehem native responded with a fly out a ground out and a strikeout to avoid any runs.
- ESU tallied its first hit of the afternoon in the top of the 4th, as Nies sent a one-out single through the left-side gap. Unfortunately for ESU, the Warriors followed with two strikeouts to close the half inning.
- West Chester struck first again in game two, using a leadoff single and a wild pitch to advance a runner into scoring position. With a runner on second and no outs, a ground out advanced the runner to third. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Emily King came next, as WCU held a 1-0 lead after four frames.
- A one-out single by Shaw-Tait setup Donaghue for her first big fly of the season, as the Warriors posted their first lead of the afternoon. Roche looked to add another run with a two-out single and a stolen base, but a ground out thwarted the chance of an insurance run.
- Jenkins took over mound duties and allowed a one-out double, but stranded the Ram on second with a flyout and a ground out.
- Sofia Cecchin and Kaitlin Houser added two-out singles in the top of the 6th and the top of the 7th, respectively, but the Warriors could not plate the runners home.
- In the final inning of the doubleheader, Jenkins shutdown the Rams, striking out the final two batters to preserve the 2-1 win and pick up her third save of the season in the process.
