EAST STROUDSBURG -- The East Stroudsburg University softball team picked up a pair of key PSAC East victories by sweeping Mansfield (7-5, 8-0) on Senior Day at Creekview Park.
The Warriors (32-6, 7-5 PSAC) improve their program record for wins in a season to 32. The Mountaineers drop to 5-21, 1-13 in conference action.
Trailing 5-2 after five innings of game one, ESU prevailed with a five-run bottom of the 6th to earn the comeback victory in game one. The Warriors picked up its second sweep in PSAC play by scoring three runs in the bottom 4th and ended game two early with a five-run bottom of the 5th to reach the eight-run mercy rule threshold.
Notables
- Kaitlyn Caleen (2-2) and Molly Nies (5-7) each posted five RBIs, with Nies smacking four singles along with a double.
- Ashley Spencer and Kate Donaghue both tallied two hits and two RBIs.
- Sofia Cecchin, Brooke McKeown, Lexi Wright and Rachel Seiverd also sent Warriors home.
- Leigh Ann Jenkins (W, 9-2) picked up the win in game one in relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs, while striking out three. Â Katie Zaun pitched the first four innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs, fanning six Mounties.
- Paige Zigmund (W, 10-0) picked up the game two victory, firing four strikeouts and scattered three hits. She held the Mounties off the scoreboard throughout the five innings of action.
- ESU was successful on all 11 of its stolen base attempts. Â
How It Happened - Game One
- The Warriors took the first lead of the doubleheader in the bottom of the 2nd, with Spencer driving home Cecchin on a single. After Denva Shaw-Tait advanced Spencer to third with a fly out, Caleen came through with an RBI with a sacrifice bunt.
- The Mounties tied the contest in the top of the 4th, on an RBI single and an RBI double.
- MU took its first lead of the contest in the top of the 5th, scoring three runs on four hits. A two-RBI single followed by another RBI single.
- ESU needed a big inning offensively and it got one in the bottom of the 6th. Caleen cut the deficit to two runs with an RBI single. Donaghue immediately followed with an RBI single herself. The Warriors tied the contest with Wright's RBI single.
- With the score tied, Nies provided two RBIs with a single to close out the bottom of the 6th.
- Jenkins set MU down in order to pick up her ninth win of the season.
How It Happened - Game Two
- Zigmund allowed just three hits, scattering each hit in three different frames.
- ESU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 4th, as Caleen provided another RBI with a single up the middle. Donaghue followed with a single, while Wright picked up an RBI single, as suddenly ESU led 3-0.
- The Warriors would end the game in its next at bats, scoring five runs on four hits. ESU recorded three runs in consecutive at bats, with a Spencer RBI single, a Shaw-Tait RBI triple, and a Seiverd RBI base hit provided three runs. ESU ended the contest with four consecutive walks, as ESU scored two runs via walks.
