BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg University softball team closed the 2022 regular season with a pair of road losses at Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon, falling to Huskies, 6-1 and 8-6 at Jan. M Hutchinson Field.
Despite the losses, the Warriors (33-9, 8-8 PSAC East) were able to clinch the fifth and final seed in the PSAC East in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. ESU will battle PSAC West four-seed Gannon on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Park in Quakertown.
Notables
- Katherine Donaghue (4-6) and Reilly Vicendese (4-7) each posted four hits, with Donaghue blasting a home run on the day. Vicendese also drove in a run.
- Kaitlyn Caleen also smacked a home run, sending home a pair of Warriors.
- Brooke McKeown added three hits, while Molly Nies also collected a run batted in.
- Katie Zaun (11-5) suffered the loss in game one, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. She struck out three Huskies. Mickayla Grow came in relief for the final two outs, allowing two hits and one run.
- Paige Zigmund (L, 10-1) pitched a complete game in the latter half of the twin bill, allowing 10 hits and eight runs in her first charged loss as a Warrior.
How It Happened - Game One
- ESU plated the first run of the contest in the top of the 3rd. After Caleen reached base on an error, the Bangor native would the cross the plate following a bunt single by Donaghue and an error by the Husky first baseman.
- BU took the lead in the home half of the third inning, as a pair of RBI doubles lifted the Huskies to a 2-1 advantage.
- The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th, as Bloomsburg used a sacrifice fly to score its third run of the contest.
- ESU could not cut into the deficit, as BU took control with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the 6th. Once again, a pair of RBI doubles did the damage.
- Facing its final three outs, McKeown extended the game with a two-out single, but a line out would end the contest, with Bloomsburg earning a 6-1 win in game one.
How It Happened - Game Two
- ESU looked to take the first once again, with three hits in the first inning, loading the bases, but back-to-back foul outs to the catcher would strand three Warriors on base.
- In the home half of the first inning, a walk, double and single plated a pair of Huskies, as another RBI single brought home the third run of the frame.
- The BU lead didn't last, as the Warriors fought back with three runs on three hits to tie the contest. Nies used a sacrifice fly, while Vicendese sent an RBI single to third base. McKeown would score on a double steal to tie the game at 3-3.
- The Huskies retook the lead in the bottom of the 3rd, with a sacrifice fly, grabbing a 4-3 scoreboard edge. A two-run home run in the next inning, propelled BU to a 6-3 lead after four frames.
- Once again, ESU fought back to tie the game in the top of the 5th, as Caleen and Donaghue smacked a pair of back-to-back home runs, tying the contest at 6-6 through five.
- A two-RBI double in the bottom of the 6th gave the Huskies the lead for good. Facing its final three outs, Spencer reached on a one-out error, but a foul out and strikeout would close the game out, in an 8-6 win for Bloomsburg.
