Jaime Wohlbach earns her 300th career win

PHILADELPHIA -- The East Stroudsburg University softball team conceded just two runs and held Chestnut Hill to just three hits in 14 innings, sweeping the Griffins (3-1, 8-1) in Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors, who are receiving votes for the second consecutive week in the NFCA Softball Coaches Poll, improve to 24-2. The Griffins fall to 6-22.

With the game two victory, ESU head coach Jaime Wohlbach picked up her 300th collegiate victory. She now has 131 wins as a Warrior. she posted 115 victories at Delaware and 54 triumphs at Iona prior to coming to the Poconos.

Notables

  • Ashley Spencer provided all three runs in game one for ESU with a 3-run home run. She has smacked a double on the day. Spencer, who became the ESU all-time RBIs leader earlier this season, now has 101 career RBIs after the three-run home run.
  • Kaitlin Houser belted her first career home run in game two, which lifted ESU to an 8-0 lead.
  • Reilly Vicendese (3-7, 2B), Denva Shaw-Tait (3-6), Sofia Cecchin (2B), Lexi Wright (2B) and Molly Nies all provided an RBI. Vicendese scored three runs to pace the Warriors.
  • Morgan Chapman and Katie Zaun (W, 7-2) combined to toss a one-hitter in game one, with the lone hit coming off Chapman via a solo home run in the second inning. After Chapman tossed the first three innings, Zaun took over in the fourth frame and struck out 11 of 12 batters she faced, including a stretch of eight consecutive batters. Zaun's lone non-strikeout out came via a fouled-out bunt to the catcher to end the sixth inning.
  • Paige Zigmund and Leigh Ann Jenkins (W, 7-0) followed with another strong pitching performance in game two, combining to allow just one hit each in seven innings, with only one unearned run scoring in the bottom of the 7th inning.
  • Overall, ESU's pitching staff posted a .50 ERA in 14 innings on the day, striking out 20 Griffins and held CHC to bat just .064. The Warriors issued just two walks.

How it Happened - Game One

  • After a Vicendese infield single and a Cecchin walk, Spencer blasted her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to give ESU an early 3-0 advantage.
  • CHC countered in the bottom of the 2nd, with a leadoff solo homerun. That was lone hit of the ball game for the Griffins. ESU faced just two over the minimum batters in the game, with a Warrior error allowing a runner to reach base later on in the second inning.
  • Neither team could produce a run after the sixth inning. ESU posted back-to-back one out singles in the third and a double in the sixth, but could not pad their lead.
  • Zaun dominated with 11 strikeouts in just four innings of work to earn her sixth win of her freshman season.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • Just as it did in game one, ESU got the bats going early on in game two. A two-out Cecchin double would score Vicendese, as the Warriors took an early advantage on the scoreboard.
  • ESU took a two-run lead in the third frame, as Vicendese would send a two-out double to score Coyle, who also reached base via a two-bagger.
  • Zigmund pitched well in her three innings of work, allowing just one baserunner via a single in the second.
  • The Warriors doubled its lead to four with a pair of runs in the top of the 4th. After a Spencer walk and a Shaw-Tait single, Abigail Weirich advanced the runners over with a groundout. A wild pitch scored Spencer and moved Shaw-Tait to third base. ESU capitalized on the opportunity, with Wright sending an RBI single to left field. ESU took a 4-0 lead after the two-run inning.
  • After allowing the first two batters to reach base via a walk and fielder's choice, Jenkins struckout the next three batters to escape the inning with no harm done.
  • In the top of the 5th, Shaw-Tait singled home Vicendese with two outs, as the Warriors grabbed a 5-0 advantage. In the top  of the sixth, ESU scored another run, with Nies using a fielder's choice to score Wright with one out.
  • With two outs in the top of the 7th, Houser blasted her two-run home run which extended the ESU lead to 8-0. ESU loaded the bases later on in the frame, but all three were stranded.
  • Chestnut Hill scored its first run since the third inning of game one in its final at bats on the day. A double steal was culprit. The run was unearned with a Warrior throwing error earlier in the inning.
