Millersville, Pa. -- Sophomore midfielder and 2021 All-American Emily Mitarotonda did it all for the fourth-ranked East Stroudsburg University lacrosse team, leading the Warriors to a 15-9 victory over Millersville at Biemersderfer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors (11-0, 6-0 PSAC East) remain undefeated in its first 11 games of 2022 and extends its best-ever start to a season. The Marauders (8-4, 4-3 PSAC East) see its three-game winning streak snapped with the falter.
ESU built a 7-0 lead and withstood a 'Ville comeback attempt by matching Millersville's five second half goals.
Notables
- Mitarotonda recorded seven points on six goals and an assist. Only one of her shots did not find the back of the net, as the Rockaway, N.J. product also earned a season-high 12 draw controls and scooped two ground balls.
- Gianna LeDuc posted two goals and two assists, while Kiki Fitzpatrick added a pair of goals and one assist. Sophia Graffeo (1 goal, 1 assist) and Madison Bagatta (2 goals) also contributed multiple points.
- Rounding out point talliers were McKenna Conklin and Lauren Neufeld who each added a goal, while Mary Fitzsimmons distributed an assist.
- GK Bella Gismondi made six saves in the cage for the Warriors to pick up her sixth win of the campaign
- The Warriors led 32-22 on shots, 27-16 on shots on goal, 16-12 on draw controls and had four less turnovers. The Warriors successfully cleared possession from their defensive zone on 18-of-19 tries.
- ESU's 11-game winning streak ranks second in program-history. The Warriors look to tie the 12-game program record winning streak set in 2017 against West Chester next Saturday at Whitenight Field.
How it Happened
- It was a successful first quarter for ESU, with the Warriors scoring five unanswered goals and added two additional goals in the second quarter before Millersville could answer. Mitarotonda was responsible for three of ESU's first seven goals, while Bagatta, Fitzpatrick, LeDuc and Neufeld all provided tallies on the scoreboard.
- The Marauders looked to steal momentum in the second quarter, scoring four of the next five goals to slice the deficit to just four at 8-4 with over 10 minutes remaining until halftime. The 'Ville scoring run happened fast, with four goals in under two minutes, as suddenly, 'Ville was back in the game.
- ESU closed the first half and opened the second half strong, taking a 10-4 halftime lead and lengthened its advantage on the scoreboard to 12-4, following a 4-0 sprint. Mitarotonda, Bagatta, Conklin and LeDuc all buried goals in the stretch.
- With the Warriors up by eight goals, MU found the back of the net five of the final eight goals, but ESU weathered the storm to pick up the 15-9 win.
