Men’s Soccer Set for Season Opener Thursday against Felician

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men’s soccer team is set to begin its 95th season of competition on Thursday, when the Warriors host Felician at Eiler-Martin Stadium on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Who’s Back: Returning for the Red and Black are 2021 all-conference selections Colby Raymond (All-PSAC East First Team) and Bradley Turocy (All-PSAC East Second Team). The duo combined for 40 points in 2021, as the Warriors leading goals and assists leader. Other returning starters include Hubert Herrera and Abdullah Nuredini. Goalkeeper Raymond Fortebuono, who started in eight games a season ago is back. Another returning starter, Stelios Melekos, who started the first eight games before suffering a season-ending injury is back.

Who’s Not: Two all-conference players have graduated for the Warriors in Lucas Marques and Juan Carlos. The Warriors will be sporting a new starting goalkeeper in 2022, with Evan Miele also earning his degree. Other starters that have exhausted eligibility include Nils Bjorquist, Oliver Lundberg and Teun Jacobs. 

Who’s New: ESU brings in a plethora of newcomers, including three goalkeepers (Helgi Hermannson, Brayden Evans and Aiden Hoopes, along with Fortebuono returning). ESU welcomes 19 freshmen join the roster, while Cam Wheeler joins the roster as a transfer from Purdue Fort Wayne. 

The Coach: Rob Berkowitz enters his 11th season at the helm of the Warriors’ men’s soccer team, while also serving as the ESU women’s soccer coach for the past 14 seasons. Berkowitz looks to guide ESU back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017, when the Warriors claimed the PSAC Title.

Non-Conference Schedule: Following a meeting with Felcian, ESU will host Molloy on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Two additional non-conference opponents on the horizon include Holy Family (Aug. 31) and the University of the District Columbia (Sept. 6) on the road, before the Warriors open PSAC East conference play on Sat., September 10th against Shepherd. ESU will battle the seven PSAC East squads twice and will have an additional non-conference matchup at Mercy on Oct. 18. 

Postseason: Following the regular season, the PSAC Tournament is set to begin on Nov. 1. The top-three seeds in each division will qualify for the tournament, with the top-seed in the Eastern Division hosting the semifinals and championship match. The Warriors hope to secure its 25th berth in the NCAA Tournament and its first since 2017, when ESU claimed its 20th PSAC Championship. With it being an NCAA Division II National Championship Festival Year, the NCAA Semifinals and NCAA Championships  will be located in Seattle.
