Weise Ties Single Season Three-Point Record in Warriors' Loss to West Chester

EAST STROUDSBURG – Despite Ryan Weise tying the single season record for three pointers made, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team failed to overcome an early first quarter deficit as the Warriors fell to West Chester, 76-50, on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors drop to 9-8 overall and 5-6 in the PSAC while the Golden Rams win their third consecutive game to improve to 10-7 on the season and 7-5 in the conference.

Coming into the night with an NCAA DII leading 61 three pointers, Weise knocked down the record tying shot at 0:57 seconds in the first quarter as the graduate student finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steal.

  • Weise tied Maryellen Onofre's (2005-06) single season record with her 63rd three-pointer
     
  • Through 17 games, Weise is averaging 17.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 46.7% overall, 48.1% from beyond the arc and 81.1% at the free throw line
     
  • Graduate student Shyla Sanford contributed eight points, four rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist
     
  • In 11 minutes off the bench, Claire Courter added eight points, one rebound and a steal
     
  • The Warriors were unable to find their rhythm on offense, finishing 20-of-66 (30.3%) from the floor, 4-of-24 (16.7%) from long distance and 6-of-12 (50.%) at the charity stripe
     
  • West Chester went an efficient 29-of-52 (55.8%) overall and 5-of-8 (62.5%) from beyond the arc, while converting 13-of-20 (65.0%) at the line
     
  • The Golden Rams were led were led by a pair of 20-point double-doubles as Leah Johnson poured in a game-high 21 points to go along with 11 assists and a trio of boards. Emily McAteer added 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks
     
  • West Chester held a huge advantage over ESU in both rebounds (51-24) and points in the paint (42-24)
How It Happened
  • West Chester opened the game on a 12-0 run, making five of their first six shots, before the Warriors answered with five straight points to make the score 12-5 at the 5:30 mark. The Golden Rams continued their hot shooting the rest of the period, using a 15-8 spurt over the final four-plus minutes to grab a 27-13 lead.
     
  • The teams traded shots up until the media break in the second quarter as the Warriors edged the Golden Rams, 8-7, to trim their deficit down to 34-21. However, West Chester scored eight of the final 10 points in the first half which gave them a 42-23 edge going into the locker room.
     
  • The Golden Rams carried their momentum over into the second half, using a 9-4 run to push their advantage to 51-27. Following the media timeout, West Chester took their largest lead of the game at 61-31 to close out the third quarter.   
     
  • Over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Warriors outscored the Golden Rams, 9-5, to make the score 66-40. The teams would each tally 10 points the rest of the way as West Chester earned a 76-50 win.
