Women’s Basketball Falls at Shippensburg in PSAC East Opener

SHIPPENSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team was defeated by Shippensburg, 71-44, in their PSAC East opener on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.

The Warriors suffered their first loss of the new year, dropping to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC while the Raiders go to 10-2 on the season and 5-1 in the conference.

Notables
  • After a scoreless first half, graduate student Ryan Weise finished with nine points, two steals, one rebound and one assist
     
  • Graduate student Shyla Sanford added nine points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal
     
  • Sophomore Jessica Polin finished with eight points and four rebounds while senior Claire Courter scored a season-high seven points
     
  • ESU shot a season-low 16-of-61 (26.2%) from the floor, while going 5-of-21 (23.8%) from beyond the arc
     
  • Shippensburg was an efficient 22-of-44 (50.0%) from the field but just 3-of-12 (25.0%) from three-point territory
     
  • At the free throw line, Shippensburg held a huge advantage by going 24-of-31 (77.4%) compared to 7-of-12 (58.3%) for the Warriors
     
  • Shippensburg was paced by a trio of double-digit scorers as the PSAC leading scorer, Ariel Jones, notched 16 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Treasure George and Lauren Pettis each added 11 points while combining for 11 rebounds.
     
  • ESU and Shippensburg totaled 45 turnovers as the Warriors committed 23 while the Raiders had 22
     
  • The Raiders have now won five of the last six meetings between the teams dating back to 2019
How It Happened
  • The Raiders raced out to a 6-0 lead, holding the Warriors to 0-of-8 from the field headed into the media timeout. After Shippensburg pushed their edge to eight out of the break, Vogel got ESU on the board with a layup at the 4:36 mark to make the score 8-2. The Raiders proceeded to go on an 9-2 run over the next two-plus minutes to stretch their advantage to 17-4. However, Sanford scored the final six points of the first quarter to cut ESU's deficit to 17-10.
     
  • After Polin knocked down a three pointer getting the Warriors within four (17-13) to begin the second quarter, Shippensburg answered with a 12-0 spurt to push their back to lead back to 29-13 which forced ESU into a timeout. Over the final 5:18 of the first half, the Raiders went on to outscore the Warriors, 8-5, for a 37-20 advantage going into the break.
     
  • Shippensburg kept it rolling to begin the second half, extending their lead to 44-21 before Weise tallied her first points of the game and Polin knocked down a three pointer to make the score 44-26. The Raiders regained a 22-point lead with 2:31 to go in the third quarter but Weise recorded the final five points to make the score 52-35 in favor of Shippensburg.
     
  • It was all Shippensburg to open the fourth quarter as the Raiders used a 10-0 run to grow their lead to 62-35. Following the media timeout, Shippensburg added a lay up before Claire Courter hit a jumper for the Warriors' first bucket at the 2:43 mark. The Raiders would ultimately close out the game, 71-44, to secure the victory.
