RICHMOND, VA. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as Viginia Union took down the Warriors, 62-42, in the final game of the CIAA/PSAC Classic on Sunday afternoon inside Barco-Stevens Hall.
The Warriors are 1-1 following a split of the opening weekend while the host Panthers improved to 2-0.
Notables
- Juniors Cassidy Saylor and Izzy Vogel paced the Warriors with 10 points each as well as combing for six rebounds and a block
- Senior Gwenn Sabato added six points, four rebounds and a steal while junior Emily Chmiel recorded six points and five rebounds
- Junior Jessica Polin had three points, three rebounds and three steals
- ESU shot 15-for-49 (30.6%) overall from the field and 1-for-7 from beyond the arc (14.3%), but were an efficient 11-for-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line
- The Panthers finished with four double figure scorers lead by a double-double from Bruni Martinez on 10 points and 15 rebounds. Ny Langley and Nevaeh Reaves both had 13 points while Taniah Johnson added 10 points.
- Virginia Union was more efficient from the floor shooting 25-for-58 (43.1%) overall and 7-for-18 (38.9%) from three-point range but were limited to 5-of-8 (55.6%) at the stripe
- VUU led ESU in rebounds (34-25), points in the paint (30-22) and points off turnovers (21-2) after forcing the Warriors into 20 miscues
How It Happened
- The teams went back and forth through the first five minutes of the game as ESU held a slim lead at 9-8 with 4:29 on the clock. From that point on Virginia Union closed out the first quarter on a 18-5 run to jump ahead 26-14.
- With the Panthers ahead 31-14 in the second quarter, ESU battled back with a 6-0 run to trim the deficit to 31-20. Over the last four minutes of the half, Virginia Union outscored the Warriors 9-4 to take a 40-24 lead into the break.
- In the third quarter, the teams combined for 17 points on 8-for-25 (32.0%) shooting as the Panthers increased their edge by one point to 49-32.
- Through the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, Virgina Union used a 11-2 run to push the edge to 60-34. ESU would score eight of the final 10 points of the game with the Panthers earning a 62-42 victory.
