EAST STROUDSBURG – After the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season, the Warriors bounced back by pulling away in the fourth quarter to earn a 57-42 victory over Staten Island in the home opener on Saturday afternoon inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors improved to 2-1 through the first three games of the 2023-24 campaign and defeated the Dolphins for the second straight time, who dropped to 1-2.
ESU went into the fourth quarter with a 42-25 lead over Staten Island before the Warriors proceeded to outscore the Dolphins, 15-7, in the period to earn a 15-point victory.
Notables
- Junior Izzy Vogel finished with a game and season-high 17 points after pouring in 10 in the first quarter to go along with three rebounds and a block
- Fellow classmate Katie Geisler added eight points, five rebounds, three steals and an assist while junior Cassidy Saylor registered eight points, a career-high 11 rebounds, three assists and a block
- Senior Gwenn Sabato and junior Jessica Polin each scored six points while combining for three steals, two assists and a board
- Corrin Gill did a little bit of everything for the Warriors as the junior totaled four points, six assists, four steals and a rebound
- Senior Carley Adams (two assists, two steals) and junior Emily Chmiel (three rebounds) both finished with four points
- Dana Phelan paced Staten Island with a team-high 11 points to go with five rebounds while Kyra Rose (eight points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one block) and Jenalyse Alacorn (six points, 11 rebounds, one steal, one block) stuffed the stat sheet for the Dolphins
- Overall, the Warriors shot 22-for-59 (37.3%) from the field while limiting Staten Island to 12-for-50 (24.0%). Neither team could find a rhythm from three-point territory as the Warriors (4-for-16, 25.0%) and Dolphins (5-for-16, 31.3%) combined to shoot 28.1% (9-for-32).
- Despite holding an edge at the free throw, Staten Island went 13-for-24 (54.2%) compared to 9-for-14 (64.3%) for the Warriors
- ESU took advantage of 26 turnovers from the Dolphins as the Warriors recorded 24 points off the miscues. The Warriors finished with a season-low 10 turnovers.
- Staten Island outrebounded the ESU by a wide margin (50-31), but the Warriors still dominated the paint as they outscored the Dolphins, 32-10
How It Happened
- After Staten Island knocked down the first three-pointer of the game, the Warriors answered back with a 10-0 run over the next 1:07 to take a 10-3 lead. Staten Island settled back in following a timeout as the Dolphins proceeded to outscore ESU, 11-6, over the final six-plus minutes of the first quarter to cut the Warriors' advantage to 16-14.
- The Dolphins continued to chip away at the deficit to start the second quarter as Staten Island trailed by one point at 21-20, before an 8-1 run by the Warriors extended the lead back to 29-21. Over the final four-plus minutes of the first half, Staten Island cut ESU's advantage to 33-27 headed into the break.
- In a poor shooting third quarter for both teams, the Warriors were able to push their lead to seven points on multiple occasions before ultimately wrapping up the period with a 42-35 edge. ESU went 3-for-16 (18.8%) overall and 0-for-6 from beyond the arc while Staten Island finished 3-for-12 (25.0%) from the floor and 1-for-4 (25.0%) from distance.
- Staten Island went on a 4-0 run to begin the fourth quarter, cutting the Warriors' lead to 42-39, before ESU produced a 6-0 spurt in 52 seconds to go up 48-39. The Dolphins would get as close as 48-41 with 5:42 remaining, however the Warriors ended the game on a 9-1 run to earn a 57-42 win.
