ESU Downs Clarion, McAliley Becomes Fifth Warrior to score 1,000th Career Points as a Junior

CLARION, Pa. – After being held to three points in the first half, East Stroudsburg University men's basketball forward Lakeem McAliley recorded 20 points in the second half, picking up his 1,000th career point in the process in an 84-77 win over Clarion on Monday afternoon at Tippin Gymnasium.

With the win, the Warriors improve to 6-1, 2-1 in PSAC play. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-5 after its second consecutive loss.

McAliley becomes just the fifth Warrior to reach 1,000 career points during his junior season, joining Warrior legends Jonathan Roberts, Whis Grant, Don Bones and Rasheed Moore. The Philadelphia native becomes the 34th overall member of ESU's 1,000-point club. He now ranks 32nd in scoring all-time at ESU with 1,019 career points, surpassing Channon Easley (1,016) and Chris Bach (1,005).



Notables
  • Along with McAliley's season and game-high 23 points (8-11 FG, 7-9 FT), the redshirt junior added seven rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. His 23 points are the most by a Warrior this season. He shot 7-9 from the floor in the second half and 6-7 from the stripe.
  • Also reaching double-figures on the afternoon was Nasir Griffin (15 pts, 7-10 FG, 3 blocks), Jaelen McGlone (15 pts, 5 reb, 3-7 FG, 6-9 FT) and Justin Paz (13 pts).
  • McGlone was a force defensively, recording six steals against the Golden Eagles. The Cheltenham native's six swipes are tied for the second moist since 2002-03, most recently done by Carlos Pepin in the 2021-22 season opener against Wheeling. He recorded a team-best plus-minus of +11 during his 24 minutes on the court.
  • Clarion's Cam Kearney, Jeremy Thomas III and Jahmari Hamilton-Brown each recorded 13 points for the Golden Eagles.
  • ESU shot more efficiently (53.7% - 43.8%) led in steals (15-11), points off turnovers (24-15), bench points (43-29), points in the paint (48-42) and fastbreak points (22-19) and had fewer turnovers (17-24). The Warriors led 38:40 of the 40-minute contest.
How It Happened
  • After Clarion took an early lead, the Warriors took a lead at 4-3 with a jumper from Tyshawn Trail. ESU grew its advantage to as high as 12 at 19-7 with 12:32 remaining in the opening half, but the Golden Eagles fought back to within a single point of ESU at 35-34. The Warriors did not relinquish the advantage on the scoreboard, taking a three-point lead into the locker room at 41-38. The Warriors shot a red-hot 60 percent in the opening half (15-25 FG).
  • After the intermission, Clarion briefly took a one-point lead at 46-45, as McAliley recorded his fourth point and his 1,000th point to lift ESU to a lead for good in the matchup.
  • The two squads continued to exchange points on John Calipari Court, with the Warriors holding a lead as high as 10 points at 79-69 with 1:48 remaining. ESU ultimately held on to win 84-77.
