Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback to #9 Gannon

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team fell to 9th/13th ranked Gannon, 65-33, in a PSAC contest on Saturday afternoon inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

ESU could not keep pace with one of the top teams in the country as the Warriors slipped to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the PSAC. The Golden Knights won their sixth consecutive game to move to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Notables
  • Carley Adams paced the Warriors once again as the senior finished with 11 points after shooting 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Over the last two games, Adams is 17-for-18 at the charity stripe and shooting 22-for-24 (91.7%) overall through six games.
  • Junior Izzy Vogel notched seven points, three rebounds and one steal while fellow classmate Katie Geisler added five points and five rebounds
  • Corrin Gill tallied five points, three rebounds and pair of assists while Katie Geisler contributed five points and five rebounds. Junior Emily Chmiel (three rebounds, one steal) and freshman Kaitlyn McGeary each had four points
  • Carissa Dunham registered a game-high 17 points while Samantha Pirosko (seven rebounds, six steals, one assist) and Bri Claxon (two steals, one assist) both poured in 12 points
  • Gannon ended the game shooting 40.8 percent from the floor (20-of-49) while making 6-of-19 (31.6%) 3-pointers. ESU struggled shooting the basketball as the Warriors finished at 19.4 percent from the field (7-for-36) and 1-of-5 (20.0%) from beyond the arc
  • Both teams were excellent at the free throw line as the Golden Knights went 19-for-23 (82.6%) compared to 18-for-21 (85.7%) for ESU
  • Gannon forced the Warriors into a season-high 28 turnovers and turned the miscues into 30 points
How It Happened
  • The Golden Knights scored the first nine points of the game until Geisler converted a layup at the 3:22 mark to make the score 9-2. Over the last three minutes of the first quarter, Gannon outscored ESU 7-3 to extend the lead to 16-5. 
     
  • Through the first 5:18 of the second period, the Golden Knights went on a 7-3 run with the help of knocking down 4-of-5 from the free throw line to push the advantage to 23-8. The Golden Knights closed out the first half by scoring 13 of the final 24 points to extend the lead to 36-17. 
     
  • After Gill scored the first points of the second half for ESU, the Golden Knights answered with back-to-back three pointers to take a 42-19 advantage. The Warriors responded with a 5-0 to make the score 42-24, but over the final 4:52 of the period Gannon outscored ESU, 12-6, to take a 54-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
     
  • In the final 10 minutes, the Golden Knights poured in 11 points compared to three for ESU while holding the Warriors to 0-of-12 shooting in the fourth quarter.
